Another point in favour of staying in the UK is your daughter at home.

You - and probably you parents - might feel more comfortable if you are on the end of a UK connected mobile and not too far away in the unlikely event you need to rush home.

I would have thought that European restaurants would understand what a celiac was and be able to provide a suitable dish. I could understand somewhere very underdeveloped not having a clue but not in a major european city.

Absolutely, I don't want it to sound as though I'm denigrating our European neighbours, I'm questioning my ability to communicate effectively.

Go somewhere coastal and there'll be loads of fresh fish and seafood without needing to eat pasta and pizza restaurants where there are tourists will always have menus in English

You'll have no issues communicating, except possibly in taxis (where I've come unstuck in Madrid before)

Yes, although a long time ago. Couple of interesting museums, generally quite dull (like Switzerland generally imo). Also V expensive when you get there

Budapest is super, loads of things to see, Boris Bikes to hire, metro if you don't, eating out is cheap (or was two years ago). Many of the sights are Cold War related, which makes for a different vibe, we spent a week there and loved it.

Quite popular with stag doos - we're off there for my brother's stag doo - fortunately we do have a few older blokes going so it won't be a mad booze up - certainly want to do some of the museums between pub stops. I'm trying to persuade them to do the beer bike !!

I can recommend The Hospital in the Rock. It's set in the caves within the rock which the castle is on. Used as a hospital in WW2, and in the 56 uprising, then as a Cold War bunker. You have to go on a guided tour (which is in English), and there are several areas set up as operating theatres etc with very good wax works and other displays. They even let you wind up the air raid siren!
The Secret Service museum is also very good, if a bit sobering.
Some of the other museums only had information on the displays in Hungarian (the Army museum springs to mind for this) but were very good nevertheless. Loved being able to handle a PPSh41.

When I went there were 400 Forints to the pound, so 10000 Forint notes aren't uncommon, which makes you feel very wealthy!

How did you go about things? Booking a package, booking separately? Any language problems?

Personally, I use Seat61.com if I'm going by train, have a look at the various airline sites if flying (prefer to avoid, myself) and avoid Ryanair at almost any cost!
Booking.com and TripAdviser are good for finding accommodation and restaurants etc.
As for somewhere to go - Ireland?

not being flipant but London really is the best city ...its full of bloody tourists tho ..get a nice hotel and enjoy it..
the Royal Horse guards is very nice ..opposite the london eye.. not cheap but you wont need to pay euro rip off and flights...
Claridges is the best hotel to impress your wife..she will love you for ever...its a must for the special treat..

What things are you really looking for from the trip?

On further investigation it looks a little corporate.
Not a great deal to be honest, just something for a few days off that isn't here. We're both quite easily pleased so a few nice buildings, a bit of history, maybe a museum or two, some interesting streets to have a nose through the shop windows, that kind of thing.
Looked at Vienna but Austria seems to be a bit of a pain for flights.
Berlin is a strong contender at the mo.

London is pretty cool, but although I wouldn't and couldn't possibly claim to have seen that much of it I have been quite a few visits and I've had a holiday or two there (my dads from London) so whilst it's not off the list it's pretty low down as we'd both rather go somewhere we haven't been before.
