How about this made in 1929, 9 carat gold, in its original box, Rolex pocket watch? 🤔 I've kind of lost interest in that Rolex Submariner due to the cost and its close similarity to my Raymond Weil divers watch.

The seller has a few watches up for sale and that particular one has by far the worst photos so I am left wondering what they are trying to hide.

If you're looking for something "a bit different" @Accy cyclist, but don't want to break the bank, have a look at Eberhard & Co watches. Very good bang-for-buck second hand.

And yes, poor photos on a listing are a potential alarm bell.

I don't mind paying to get a watch serviced if it needs it, but I steer away from potential basket cases.

@Regular.Cyclist and any others in the know. Do Longines watches keep their value? I know if they do it won't be like Rolex's do, but I ask as I saw this one in a jewelers today. The seller says it's from the 1990's and is in very good condition, complete with the original box and papers. He wants £395 for it. The other watch in the photos is a Dunhill. He wants £295 for that one.

Original box and papers do play a part in value in anything, especially watches. Longines aren’t renowned for keeping there value but at £395 it has lost a lot of it already and should have reached a stable period in its life.

Remember older watches tend to wear smaller than one now but, if it talks to you, then go for it. I would still haggle a bit though any try and get it closer to £350, if not £300 though that is ambitious.

Ok, thanks for that! I do like it as it's very slim and quite eye catching, though those photos don't necessarily show that. Yes, I might offer him £350. He then might say he'll let me have it for £370. 🤔 I have seen the same on fleabay. Well I think it's the same for £295 with the box and papers, but I'm always dubious about pre-owned things bought on fleabay. I'll see of I can find it!

The ebay one clearly says quartz on the dial whereas the earlier one you posted doesn’t.

Personally I prefer mechanical watches.

I’d check with the seller of the first Longines that it is a mechanical watch and, if so, would prefer to buy that one. If it is a quartz then it’s possible that the dial has had work done on it which would put me off.

Longines doesn‘t get faked in the way the Rolex and other brands do so would be less worried about that.

The e-bay seller is based in Lytham, which is about 28 miles from me, so I could go to have a look at it if it'd mean saving a hundred quid, but like you say it's a quartz one. The jeweler today said he'd also give a 2 year guarantee on the one he has for sale.

Longines kind of fly under the radar compared to Rolex & Omega. Can't say for quartz (and this one is most likely to be quartz due to the case being so thin), but certainly the 1960s hand winders with the 30L movement seem to hit the sweet spot. And at the time they were made, those were rated more highly than the other two.

Forget the Dunhill. It's a fashion watch with a bog-standard ETA quartz movement inside.
