I bought my wife the fitbit charge hr. She loves it, tells her time, steps, heartrate etc & synchs all the info back to an app on her phone.

I've got the new charge HR 2, works well enough, although it's not waterproof if you're a swimmer. Does what I need but I'm not exactly a serious athlete!

A lot of it will probably come down to your aesthetic preference and budget (the Fitbit has come down in price since I got it a month ago)

Retailer wise, John Lewis give an extra year warranty and price match Currys and the like (I bought from Tesco as JL were out of stock at that point)

There are plenty of reviews out there comparing the options

I have a fitbit blaze to monitor my sleep and heartbeat vagueries.

As with the Charge, it has the steps, HRM, distance travelled etc, pretty accurately. I scratch the surface of the fitness side but can see the benefits as a fitness tracker all round health helper, particularly used in conjunction with the smartphone side: analytics, GPS etc.

You can select activities you do, pick up routines and workouts on it. Analyse everything on computer and smartphone via the app and their regular email reports.

Comfy, decent size on a smallish wrist, looks blocky but not garish as a watch and has some smartwatch gizmos, vibration alarm, music controller, picks up messages and calendar alerts, lets you know your phone is ringing - but you can't make/take calls on the wrist.

I like it and could use it far more if I was working out or training.

I've had the Fitbit charge for two years and think it's great

Now looking at the new blaze for Christmas. The link to gps isn't a feature I plan to use, I like the steps and sleep data, the blaze has a few more features to keep it interesting which I may occasionally use. For gps I'll probably just use my phone on endomondo or my garmin edge

I've got a Vivosmart HR and it's very good. I use it as a HR monitor with my Garmin 520 too and it does a good job of tracking it.

Withings Activite Pop if you're looking for something that looks like a watch. Mrs BFB loves hers.

New constant heart rate monitor version being launched early New Year.

Activite Sapphire if you're being indulgent.

First Fitbit fell off and got lost (get the safety band) second one would not sync so went back, third one had a mind of it's own and was about as reliable as a Lincolnshire roofer.

The £25 from Lidl has been fantastic.

Garmin Fenix 3 HR for me - not cheap and you need large wrists (otherwise it looks stupidly big) but it does everything you can possibly want from a sports watch, and (important for me) also covers smartwatch type notifications from my phone.

If you're considering a fitbit, be aware that some users have reported skin irritations from the band - including me.

I have a Surge, which I really like because of the GPS, and I was fine with it when wearing it just for several hours at a time. But with my current fitness drive I've wanted to wear it 24/7 (to capture all my steps and active minutes, and check on my sleep patterns), and the first time I tried I got some nasty red blistering.

I've found a solution in the shape of adhesive moleskin - I stick that inside the strap and I'm fine.

Most people don't have a problem, but it's worth bearing in mind.
