I heard on a podcast that judges in English courts, when asking about a cultural phenomenon (e.g.Love Island), are not doing so because they are out of touch, but because the judgement could be referred to as case law many decades hence, and so it is to provide a reference point for the future

Tbh, if I was a juror and any reference was made to TV popular culture then I’d need it explained.
Never watched any reality/dancing/talent shows which means I’ve pretty much stopped watching TV.
Now I’m wondering why I pay my license. 🤔

The classic quote is the judge who asked “who are the Beatles”.
And yes, he knew who they are were but needed them defined as a popular musical group. And it’s the judge’s responsibility to ensure the jury know who they are too. Otherwise there could be someone in the jury who doesn’t know, so the judge deliberately asks the embarrassing questions to help everyone else.

Jules Holland's band was hired for the Southampton uni graduation ball down in Portsmouth in summer '95, supposedly it used up a vast majority of the ball budget.

I was horrified when I read that the his New Year tv show was recorded in the summer.

Only recently found out he was in the group Squeeze... I live a sheltered life!

If you graduated in 1995 then you would still have been at primary school when Squeeze were in their 'heyday'.

I share your misgivings about his actual talent. But.

He’s filling a fairly niche role that requires someone with enough credibility to attract the performers but not too much star power to over shadow them. A big star wouldn’t be bothered to do what he does.

He also has decades of TV presenting experience and seems like a good raconteur. So is a safe pair of hands.

Jools Holland's talent as jazz/blues pianist seems pretty self evident.

Mmm, I've previously recounted seeing a friend wearing a Green Day tea shirt and asked her "so what's happening on Green Day?". She was kind enough not to sarcastically append "grandad" to her explanation. I've subsequently bought a couple of their albums so it was not in vein

There is a quote attributed to Sandy Lyle who was asked about his opinion of Tiger Woods before he was famous and an up and coming amateur.

Lyle’s response was “I don’t know, I’ve never played there”.

Not as bad as my enquiry about "Zed Zed Top" 😟

ZZ Top were formed in 1969. Just how old are you?! 😂

"do you like Dickens?"
"I don't know, I've never been to one"
