I've never heard it used in that negative sense either.

I don't even think it that weird - A sight for sore eyes means it is a relief to see it. i.e. it relieves your sore eyes.

I've always wondered though, what is making your eyes sore in the first place and how will the sight of something magically cure it?

I mean, use some eye drops and stop poking yourself in the eye! 🙄
