Clit the size of a family hatchback?
The way I learned it at school was Brackets, Order, Divide ... (Order meaning power, i.e. squared, cubed, etc).I remember it as BODMAS: Brackets Off, Divide, Multiply, Add, Subtract.
no ZathrasZathros??
no Zathras
and certainly not Zathras - he knows nothing
but Zathras might know
if you never watched Babylon5 then this will make no sense
it's not you
No, never watched it.
I am sure it is, but in my day to day life, never have I, say, been in a shop and the prices for things have been Y+X.
'Tis all nonsense I tell you, nonsense!!
So no, I never learned my Z Times Table or any of the others!![]()
I think I went to Algebra on my holidays one year. You have almost certainly used simple algebra though without even realising.
It is remarkably useful when you go into a shop and the smartarse shop owner tells you that you can pay one of three prices for your trolley load of shopping - the actual price of £127.54, or either of the solutions to the quadratic equation (3*x*x - 588.06*x + 19,423.3155) = 0.I am sure it is, but in my day to day life, never have I, say, been in a shop and the prices for things have been Y+X.

I think I've just had a stroke...It is remarkably useful when you go into a shop and the smartarse shop owner tells you that you can pay one of three prices for your trolley load of shopping - the actual price of £127.54, or either of the solutions to the quadratic equation (3*x*x - 588.06*x + 19,423.3155) = 0.
The shop owner stands there with a stupid smug look on his face and waits...
You think that £127.54 is a bit steep, so you do the calculation...
Ha - got it...
"Dear shop owner, your prices are a bit steep so I will pass on £127.54, and I sure as hell am not going to pay you £153.97. I will pay you the £42.05 instead, ta very much!"
The owner looks glum, and rings up the lower price.
See - algebra can be very useful when shopping!![]()
I can remember things (like algebra!) that I learned at school 60 years ago, but I can get to episode 5 of a 6 part series on Netflix before I remember that I had already watched it the year before!I think I've just had a stroke...

I think I might actually have mild dyscalculia.I can remember things (like algebra!) that I learned at school 60 years ago, but I can get to episode 5 of a 6 part series on Netflix before I remember that I had already watched it the year before!![]()
I always assumed that people who said that they couldn't do/understand maths just hadn't had good teachers, but maybe there is some specific part of the brain that isn't quite working favourably.I think I actually have mild discalcula.
