Admit your ignorance - things you've only just realised/learned

I had a teacher in 1st and 2nd year at the Academy who seemed to assume that everyone just 'knew' what to do and if you didn't, then tough.

Asking for help was a bit pointless too, he just wasn't interested (all he wanted to do was go play football with a group of other teachers or go to the pub with them), compounded by the fact that in my innocence, I didn't really know what to ask help for in the first place, but he must have known what I could and could not do, so he could have helped me progress, but didn't.

Then in 3rd and 4th, I ended up in a dead - end class and that was that.

Aye, thanks for nothing, your pub and football was more important than my future? 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Yes I only really learned things after I left school. 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

To be honest - and with 20:20 hindsight
I was a year or so behind the others my age in terms of maturity until I was mid 20s
so This was made worse by a lack on confidence and the maturity to question people like teachers

probably made me a better teacher many years later - as i tried to make sure any kid could ask me a question and I would never treat them as if they are being dumb
(although honestly - some were!!!)

With my brain damage, I was at least a couple of years younger mentally than the other kids, so I relied completely on the teacher and he failed me (not just him actually, something else unrelated to maths happened to me (nothing academic) with another teacher that had a devastating effect on me (and actually, another pupil) because the teacher, again, completely failed me. He did later admit his mistake however).

As for teachers being idiots, yes I realised that in primary 7.

Actually, quite a few teachers completely failed me over the years... 🙄🤦‍♂️

I'd never have dreamed of complaining though, partly because it didn't occur to me, but also because I still had too much reverence for them (remember, I relied on them).
However, with hindsight, had I complained, I'd probably have got twice as much sh*t at home anyway, such was my charming, emotionally neglected life...
My Mum was also a teacher and... Well... It was easier not to cause a scene, even though I was dying inside 🙄🤦‍♂️

Another on maths (posted on a previous thread)......
1. Multiply any number by 9 then add up the resulting digits. You will always get 9 ie 9x2=18...1+8=9 etc.
2. Starting with No1 and going up....the 1st number you reach that is divisible by all numbers 1-10 is 2520. (I think someone disagreed with that but I am told it is correct).

Part 2 is Least Common Multiple that was taught in O level maths, and can be computed.

Factor each number

1 = 1
2 = 2
3 = 3
4 = 2 ^ 2
5 = 5
6 = 2 x 3
7 = 7
8 = 2 ^ 3
9 = 3 ^ 2
10 = 5 x 2

Then multiply together the highest power of each prime above

2 ^ 3 x 3 ^ 2 x 5 x 7 = 8 x 9 x 5 x 7 = 2,520

Puzzle game procrastinator!
On the subject of maths, I know quite a few people that failed through school etc, but tell them the odds on each of your seven horse accumulator, and they will instantly tell you your due return. Likewise scoring at darts.
I saw some lads playing darts in a pub. They were using a calculator app on a phone to keep score. They even picked up the phone to work out what 20 added to the previous score came to!!

My brain hurts just reading that :wacko: .
2520 is a biblical number from the old testament prophecy of the 7 years. Each Jewish calendar month had 30 days. Therefore 12x30x7 =2520 (I think I've got that right).

I'm too tired for this now, but please explain why 8 becomes 3 and 9 becomes 2?

Thanks.

The only time this is ever possibly useful is stupid memes saying that gives you an ambiguous expression like to evaluate like 12+6÷2+4÷2 with lots of people wanging on about Bodmas in the comments.

It's not really maths, it's just convention. And no one ever uses the ÷ symbol anyway. If you understand the context of the calculation then you'll know what order to do things.
Helps with passing exams too.

Which, whatever one might think of them, still have their uses in this day and age.

I was at an event recently and went to purchase from a stand. The lady serving couldn’t add £12.50 and £7.50 without a calculator.

I would have used the till for that; I would have got there eventually, but I'd have had a restive queue of customers waiting, and I'd be unsure if I'd got it right. I also tend to have to visualise the numbers as if I'd written the sum down, and deal with the 12 + 7 first then the 0,50... it's just easier if I use the till.

One thing I find very confusing is when a customer pays for something that costs say 19,69 € and they then give me extra so that their change comes to an exact amount. If they do this before I run it through the till, then I can put the amount given into the till and give them the change the till tells me to give them. If they do it after (as some do) I have to refuse it and give them what the till says.
