"Unless it's U2!" Please God, no!

Flying Monkey: If you like garage rock, check out Awesome Color. They may well have listened to a Stooges album or two! Free Man is a good track- it ison You Tube.

I'd rate the White Stripes over any of the stuff on that list.

They're in there twice, so not sure how you'd do that.

Quite surprised that I own 5 albums out of that list, as I really don't think I seek out music anymore...just listen to stuff I like the sound of.

I will have a look, thanks. You might want to check out http://www.nevver.com - he is also a garage fan - although there is much, much more here - and the one image and one track a day concept is great. Always my first port of call in the morning...

Confession time: I own about half the albums on the list. And I haven't read NME since I was a student (over 10 years ago).

I had a similar reaction to FM when I first heard the Strokes, but ultimately they were lacking in substance, and I can't have played that album in five years or more.

Still, I'd say that the list has succeeded in getting plenty of publicity for a struggling publication.

.... Oh disappointment.

Listening to the Strokes on Spotify...

More bland brit-pop shite, aka, Keane, The Killers, and the loody awful Razorlight et al.

Erm, they're American...

The Strokes don't sound anything like that - it's very much New York art-rock in its genealogy. But they have been very influential on subsequent British bands.

The Killers are also American (and Mormons to boot), though very much influenced by British bands.

And Keane sound nothing like them (you can put them in a sack with Coldplay and Travis).

Apart from that, your argument is spot-on! ;)

... then its either the band themselves or their listeners who are pretentious - cant quite make my mind up

You rang?

But seriously, you can't lump them with Coldplay or Keane.

;) Happy Shopper Radiohead, I call it.

If it comes on the radio, I usually end up doing a Father Jack impression.
