I would have agreed with this apart from the smirk on his face when he looked straight at me as he moved across into the road space I occupied and the hand gesture indicating that I should move over to the left.

Ah if he had done that, I would have punched the car. Good call ! Don't do talking to drivers - not worth it, especially private hire.

looks like he made an error in judging the choke point ahead at the left turn . He gave you room, but had to floor it and indicated left. You obviously know the road and by your visuals in the reflection of his windows, you knew he messed up and cycled defensively (slowed down) so that he could proceed safely on his way .
