Only just found this thread. I've cut down on my coffee for similar reasons and have stuck at 3 cups a day.

I don't know who I am or even function safely without a cup of coffee when I'm trying to wake up, but I used to have another after breakfast. The hardest cup to give up was that second cup before I left the house in the morning. The only way I can cope with that is to leave about a quarter to a third in the mug and reheat it after breakfast, thus I'm only having one, not two cups in the morning. I then allow myself one more mid morning and another late afternoon.

I have cold drinks with meals and I find weak black tea quite refreshing in an emergency (ie, there's no coffee).
