Much better than trainspotting isn't it
thumbsup.png

Hmmmm, the way I'm seeing planes, I can miss quite a lot of them (cloud, etc), so actually, spotting trains could have a much higher success rate (although a website like Flightradar for trains would have made like a LOT easier), and you knew exactly where they'd be, instead of having to scan specific bits of sky, giving yourself a headache in the process (I wear my sunglasses now) in the vain hope that your quarry might just appear from behind a cloud long enough for you to see it.
Oh, and there are only a few different types of airliner now, and most of it is ruddy '777s or A330s

As much as I love(d) Concorde, seeing a 747 has ALWAYS had a bit of a thrill about it for me - in fact, a bit like Concorde, it always feels like a privilege just to see one.
'767s and '777s have always bored me rigid, I don't why, they just do, and the 757 has always looked stupid to me with those HUGE cockpit windows ('How to make a plane Ugly - put acres of glass where the cockpit should be, and then make it look 'goofy' into the bargain').
Oh, and don't get me started on the DC - 10s!

That said the international aspect of planes appeals to me, and it is accessible from anywhere.

Besides the Concorde, the 747 is my favorite passenger aircraft.

I have a soft spot for Boeing

One thing about Concorde, is that when ever it was flying over. Everyone would look up at it. A true iconic plane (along with the 747).

And I am so glad that I managed to fly on it.

One of my best memories of Concorde was going to watch it take off from Manchester Airport one evening. We went to the airport hotel at the end of the runway which was packed. After it had lined up on the runway, the pilot lit its afterburners and the heat and sound as it set off down the runway was incredible.

Nowadays we have this into Manchester, impressive but not quite the same.

My great uncle Eddie Gray was Chief Designer at BAC Hurn, he designed the tail of the VC10 and I remember watching its maiden flight on Granny's grainy black & white TV. Would it fly? Of course it did! Uncle Eddie used to send me some superb aircraft pictures, which I treasured.

But for me the 747 is THE aircraft. Along with the Spitfire and the Catalina.

Actually, I wonder what would happen. Would it break up into pieces as you see it doing at Air Traffic Control when seen on the telly, or would it simply disappear?

I imagine you'd be able to watch the bit with the transponder in enter into a rapid, uncontrolled, descent. At least until it went through 250 feet.

Cool! the tail has always reminded me of one belonging to a whale. Gorgeous aircraft too!

Along with the Spitfire

Terribly over rated things Spitfires, give me a Hurricane any day!

Oh, and talking about the Viccy 10's Tail, just look at this film (admittedly it is about the '707, but this is a really sequence nice at the beginning):

It may be a corporate video, but nontheless, sit back and enjoy!
