And the Nobel prize for literature goes to ...

Has old Bob accepted this yet or are the committee still hanging. It'd be good if he wrote a song about it. And Germaine Greer's piece (ooerr) lost all credibility when she started going on about Morrisey and his exact emphasis on words. Gerraway, it's just one long fekikin dirge from start of career to finish (has he finished, please tell me he's finished).

'Every Day Is Like Sunday' is a superb pop song and Germaine Greer's assessment of it is sound, but I don't really get her point - is she saying what Morrissey does is in any way different to what Dylan does?

And what does she make of 'You're The One For Me, Fatty'? (I love it, great pop song.)

Wonder what Germaine Greer would make of this masterpiece:

There was a you girl from Australia
Who painted her arse like a daliah
She did rather well, charging twoppence a smell
But thruppence a lick was a failure

For someone that started out saying how tedious all this discussion is, you don't half seem to be taking it a bit too seriously!

But what about....

William Zanzinger killed poor Hattie Carroll
With a cane that he twirled around his diamond ring finger
At a Baltimore hotel society gathering
And the cops were called in and his weapon took from him
As they rode him in custody down to the station
And booked William Zanzinger for first-degree murder
But you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears
Take the rag away from your face
Now ain't the time for your tears
William Zanzinger, who at twenty-four years
Owns a tobacco farm of six hundred acres
With rich wealthy parents who provide and protect him
And high office relations in the politics of Maryland
Reacted to his deed with a shrug of his shoulders
And swear words and sneering, and his tongue it was snarling
In a matter of minutes, on bail was out walking
But you who philosophize disgrace and criticize fears
Take the rag away from your face
Now ain't the time for your tears
Hattie Carroll was a maid in the kitchen
She was fifty-one years old and gave birth to ten children
Who carried the dishes and took out the garbage
And never sat once at the head of the table
And didn't even talk to the people at the table
Who just cleaned up all the food from the table
And emptied the ashtrays on a whole other level
Got killed by a blow, lay slain by a cane
That sailed through the air and came down through the room
Doomed and determined to destroy all the gentle
And she never done nothing to William Zanzinger
And you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears
Take the rag away from your face
Now ain't the time for your tears
In the courtroom of honor, the judge pounded his gavel
To show that all's equal and that the courts are on the level
And that the strings in the books ain't pulled and persuaded
And that even the nobles get properly handled
Once that the cops have chased after and caught 'em
And that the ladder of law has no top and no bottom
Stared at the person who killed for no reason
Who just happened to be feelin' that way without warnin'
And he spoke through his cloak, most deep and distinguished
And handed out strongly, for penalty and repentance
William Zanzinger with a six-month sentence
Oh, but you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears
Bury the rag deep in your face
For now's the time for your tears

if you take a peek in the dylan songs thread you will see i posted that great track

It's only certain aspects of it that are tedious - mainly trotting out the hackneyed can't sing/can't play line. The Germaine Greer piece is interesting - I may not wholly agree with it but at least it's not just repeating the same old cliches. I just don't get what point she's trying to make by bringing Morrissey into it.

And too damn right I'm taking it seriously, this is Bob we're talking about!

Maybe next year Bruce Springsteen will be awarded :hyper: or Bernie Taupin
There are also many well deserving songwriters that write in Greek and Italian, sadly their work doesn't translate well into English.

Are they? The fact you can read something in English doesn't mean it was originally written in English.
I am sure @User259 and I can distinguish between an author that writes in English and one that has been translated from another language
Btw, ot a bit, some translations, especially ones from Greek and Latin classics, are great works of lit on their own merit.
I suppose it will be a one-off and apparently there was some disagreement in the committee that makes the nominations. Personally when I do hear the names of nominees and winners I have often never heard of them, but they seem to be skewed towards people who write in English.
Boris Pasternak and Alexander Solzenhitzin (both spelled dodgilly no doubt) won I believe. The only others I can bring to mind immediately are Churchill, and Seamus Heaney - maybe Shaw and Kippling - but still two foreign Johnnies - given I'd likely not remember non English writers

At the end of that article it says that he joins Einstein and Sartre in not acknowledging the prize. But they still got theirs anyway, as you can't refuse them apparently.

Yes, although I suppose you can refuse the cash which I guess is what Satre did.
