The default USB connection for my Moto Pure is charge only. If I change that to picture transfer, fine - the phone appears in File Explorer, and I can transfer pics. But I can't transfer anything else. Googling suggests the answer is to change the USB connection to MTP file transfer, but when I do that (and the phone confirms that's the mode it's in)...

....it doesn't turn up in File Explorer, and I can't transfer anything.

Any advice/suggestions appreciated.

What does "anything else" mean?

Install "Share via HTTP" and get stuff off the phone that way.

I get stuff onto the phone by web browser or using the SFTP mode in GhostCommander file browser, but I've web and SFTP servers running anyway for web development.

It is often far less hassle to simply buy a micro usb to usb adapter and use a memory card with it
Sneakernet. How delightfully retro

If the phone and the computer are on the same wifi network, you can install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rhmsoft.fm (or similar) on your phone and then ...

Ah, I think that is basically what @mjr is suggesting.
Not exactly, but sort of similar. There are tons of way to skin this cat. Sending things back and forth over bluetooth is another idea if the computer has bluetooth and it probably doesn't involve installing anything.

Download the Wifi file transfer app.

Type the address in the app into your browser.

Done. Not sure why you'd want to mess around with cables when this way you can transfer in future without having to find a cable.

Thanks all. It doesn't matter desperately - I ended up transferring the file via Telegram. I was just baffled and wondered if anyone could enlighten me. I'm sure in the past I've used options like that to transfer, eg, Gbs of music, but I can't get it to happen this time round. If the PC didn't register the phone, that would kind of make sense; what I don't understand is why it registers the phone if I select the 'transfer images' option, but not if I select the 'transfer files' option. I wondered if I was making some basic dumb mistake...looks like I'm not. It's just...odd.
