Apple are control freaks but their devices are good. As they are so controlling you will not find virus ridden software in the app store, the same cannot be said for the Android Market. This is the price the users will pay for Android being less controlled than the iPhone OS.

I personally prefer android and have always preferred it, the majority of my class colleagues (Who are studying computer science) agree with me on preferring android, I believe it's simply down to the flexibility of it and how they don't restrict you to do anything, HTC have even went forth and declared that unlocking the bootloader (Which allows you to install third party operating system) doesn't void the warranty.

I currently have a Nexus One with CyanogenMod installed, but in the new year hope to get a Galaxy Nexus, as my contract has already ended. I made the mistake of pre-ordering Nexus One in April 2010, only to find it a couple of months later £5 per month cheaper

Why not just cut to the chase here, cut out the icons, and compare actual willies?
I would post a pic of mine if I hadn't just LMFCO reading that!

I have an Htc desire HD also. Do like android os but never owned and apple to compare it to. Love being able to sync everything to a gmail account, contacts, calendar etc. Do have a fair bit of brand loyalty to htc, I've had several over last 6 years, they are generally very well made.

Both the same.It is very hard to check for new malware so there is stuff lying dormant in all APP stores simply awaiting a trigger point to activate.

I am currently an Apple Person. I used to be a HTC person (windows, mind), but I always found that the sound quality in calls poor and that the build quality was also quite poor.

I have had three iphones now (I am very good at getting early upgrades!) and I really like them, but I am a total technophile and I am one of those - oooh look at that new thing, I must have it NOW! people.

The reasons I ike the iPhone is not the interface (as I figure all mobile phones are pretty damn easy to work out how to use), but just that they do everything I want them to and I find the build quality very good and the call quality very good and it has a great screen, but without being to big and bulky. The Samsung Galaxy Note looks amazing, but that's going to take up too much room in my handbag on a night out. Added to that, when I picked one up, it kept slipping out of my hands as it was just too big for me to grip).

I was EXTREMELY tempted by the Samsung Galaxy SII, as my dad got one. But I found it very cheap feeling and as though it would fall apart at the first available opportunity. However, it does have a better screen and a better camera than the 4s. Also I am put off by the NFC chip in the phone. In this day and age, I want the banks to make it harder for other people to use my bank account should my bag get stolen, not easier! (I think I might also like them to make it harder for ME to empty my bank acount too! Maybe a little sticker on my card saying "Are you sure you need this?!")

I wouldn't buy a HTC Android phone, as having spoken to people who work in phone shops, these have the second highest return rates amongst smart phones (following Sony Ericsson - JEEZ SE, have you STILL not worked out how to make a phone that works, yet?)

Having said all this though, my favourite phone of all time is my Nokia N95 8GB - that phone rocks and is pretty much indestructable. Had mine since 2007 and it's still going strong.

You're right when it comes to build quality with Samsung, I was really upset to find that the next Google flagship was going to be Samsung and not HTC (My Google Nexus One is solid, I've dropped it on hard concrete before and even when on the bike (taking off jersey, forgot I had it in there)), but hey ho, I'm in love with Android and more so Google so I'm forced to buy it

I have an iphone and also a HTC Desire. If Apple wasn't so f.... greedy trying to make money out every single angle then I would not have bought the desire. The iphone is a really good phone and I'd say that it's better than Android.

If you are happy doing everything exactly the way that Apple want you to do everything, the iPhone is a fantastic piece of hardware. Solid, reliable, easy to use and very powerful.

However, if you don't have Apple blood running through your veins, if you want to do things your own way, if you want to be a little bit personalised, then Android is stunning and, IMO, much, much more... everything.

Just about to ring my provider to order the upgrade for my iPhone 3gs, and the conversation will be, "Send me an iPhone 4s please"
I've never understood the whole argument about not being able to personalise the iPhone. I've had my own ringtone and wallpaper on my 3gs since I got it over 2 years ago.
SWMBO got a Samsung Galaxy S when they came out, now I'm not going to slag Android phones off but she has now cancelled that contract and she'll be taking over my iPhone 3gs when my 4s arrives.
Each to their own I say, if you like Apple buy one, if you like a different phone and OS then buy one of them instead.

I've got a Motorola Defy running modded android. It's quicker than an iphone and virtually indestructible., waterproof, shockproof. I don't need to buy a cover, can customise it as I wish even to the extent of changing the rom completely. Father in law has an iphone and there's no way I'd swap

It already is. The number of different android phones means the iphone is the best selling phone but android is the best selling OS

Number one in what way? Most sales? Just because it's got most sales (because most other smart phones on the market are Android) that doesnt mean that is the better software / operating system. Android has most sales because it has been put on the 'more affordable' market placed aimed at youngsters for example that want to go on FB etc, young non professional people etc. Android phones end up that on the second hand market loose a lot of value unlike Iphone who retain their value.
It's a bit like having a Ford Fiesta (best selling) against a BMW Mini, less sales but more built quality, unique in the way it's been branded and developed.

I was once contemplating leaving Apple for Android but after a lot of research and asking a lot of questions to shop managers, developers, techy people I decided to stay with Apple and never looked back, infact I never heard someone who owned and Iphone wanting to switch. But I remember reading on this thread of Smokeysmoo who switched to Android from Iphone. Sang Praises to Android, then after 10 days updated the thread saying that they couldnt get along and switched back to Iphone again!
