From a Chelski perspective - I'm not sure what your fans think of £50 million for Torres? Anyone a fan?

I can't see him and Drogba / Anelka working.

I think Carroll / Suarez is actually a more natural pairing.

Drogba and Torres both like to be top dogs and are both very similar. Could you play them together?

£50 million for him is ridiculous. Look at David Villa this year - just brilliant. In the world cup it was clear who the better striker of the 2 was (Villa) and he went for £35 million?

Premier league and the transfer window. Makes no sense to me at all. Contracts and loyalty don't seem to mean much to far too many players (see Torres / Carroll comments)
The only thing that makes less sense is Ashley. Who else would sack the manager of a well performing team?

I think Anelka is playing like a busted flush this year and Drogba is no spring chicken and carrying an injury so I suspect Torres will be the main man pretty soon.

£50m is a lot of money but Carroll at £35m is a really ridiculous punt. How many games has he scored and played in the premier. Crazy money.

Aargh... this annoys me so much. Okay, we could do a lot with 35 Million, but probably it will vanish into Mike Ashley's extensive back pocket and we will have lost the best striker we've produced in years, who could have been the kind of player you build a team of real quality around.
If it wasn't for Mike Ashley's back pocket, the Mighty Magpies would be down in League Two. God knows why he bothers to turn up month after month, to be abused by fans who have the bizarre idea that it is 'their' club just because they buy a ticket every other week.

There was some recent 'proper' research, I think by Delotte's, which established that, over time, the success of a Premier League club follows fairly precisely the cost of the squad. Newcastle are never going to stay in the top half dozen unless they can find someone with even bigger pockets than Mike Ashley. Given that nearly all clubs lose money - eye watering amounts of money - that is going to be quite difficult.

While we wait for more developments on the two strikers apparently leaving and arriving at Anfield for £50m and £35m respectively, let's compare Reds (and possibly soon to be Chelsea) frontman Fernando Torres and his apparent replacement, Newcastle's Andy Carroll. According to Opta, in the Premier League this season, Carroll has more goals than Torres (11 to nine), more assists (three to two) and the time lapse between goals is less (148 mins per goal compared to 211 mins per goal). The Newcastle striker's shooting accuracy is worse than Torres however, with 43% of his shots hitting the target compared to the Spaniard's 52%.

Possibly so Cracks and Torres has been well below par this year but he is a world class player whereas Carroll is as yet unproven.

I may be proved wrong but he looks a bit of a throwback to me.

Surely he won't sack Pardew

After sacking the excellant, dignified, successful Houghton - who really held the club together single-handedly / brought on Carroll / got instant promotion (which is not easy) / beat the Mackems 5-1 / beat Aresnal away - if he sacked him after all that to bring in Alan Pardew, he's got to stick with him, surely.

Hopefully the points Houghton got for you will keep you up. I've never had tremendous faith in Alan Pardew - certainly not for a club as big as Newcastle.
In terms of trophies won during the last half centuary Newcastle are not a big club, in fact they lag a fair way behind West Ham.

True - although they never stop saying they are

To be fair, their average gait this year is 46,569 - which is the 3rd highest in the country behind Man U and Arse.

A properly managed Newcastle should be a great team - they aren't, and haven't been for yonks, but they should be. I can't understand all the foreign money pouring into mickey mouse teams when Newcastle have a stadium / fans etc already there.

They all walk like that up there, I think it's because they cast their strips before May is out

Ashley is a so-called businessman whereas Abramovitch is..?

Whilst not a fan of Newcastle, I tend to wish them well having met some of their supporters years ago during a match against Ipswich. Having arrived late I could only get in with the opposition fans but it turned out to be a very amicable experience which Ipswich won 5-4 (or was it the other way round?).

Asterix - the gall!

Actually, soeone on the radio just mentioned that Carrol's 'salary' has suddenly risen; from £28k to £80k per week. I know nurses can't all play football so well, but they start at about £20k...per YEAR. How can the 'we're all in it together' economy sustain this 'sport'?

I dunno but if User1314 could pop up to Liverpool he could become a Carroll singer.
