They don't have a right to stampede out when it's dangerous to do so, e.g. when there's an oncoming vehicle.

Unfortunately sheep don't have the ability to learn the green cross code and will just walk onto the road. When on country lanes where farmers are likely to use roads to herd sheep/cattle there will be a sign and its up to YOU to be cautious.

Another incident later on when there were two stray sheep, one on either side of the road, and there was a clear passage through the middle of them. I thought, i know, if I hoon it through the middle they'll probably each be scared into the respective verge. The one on the right side of the verge obliged, but the one on the left started running to the left verge, but then at the last minute decided he wanted to be with his mate and did an about turn to then run to the other side of the road, straight in front of me! Slammed the brake on, and missed him by about 6 inches

Sorry mate but doing that and presuming you know what a sheep is going to do (especially when it comes to your limited knowledge of the natural world) is a tad foolish.

Sheep herd not by choice but by instinct so that was inevitable.... sorry!

There are roads on which to 'hoon it' and there are roads upon which not to. Any country lane where there are sheep or other livestock likely to be on the road, is most definitely in the latter category I'm afraid.

Nonsense. They're not invisible. If you see sheep or cows on the road, slow down. Otherwise, batter on.

I ride on country roads all the time, we're surrounded by them, and I've had many a close encounter of the ruminant kind. I'll tell you, I'd rather be on a bike than in a car! Once had a herd of cows squeeze past my car, some of them slipping about on the verge right next to the car. How they didn't dent the car I have no idea.

Sheep are morons. They deserve to be mowed down just for being so thick - it would help the gene pool by eliminating the ones that just don't know that when there is something bigger than them coming towards them at high speed then getting out of its way is more important than being with your mates.
It's a basic survival instinct.

The farmer shouldn't have opened the gate then!

Now, anthropomorphism never got anyone anywhere...

Wee lambs think that anything bigger than them is their mum. So if you happen to be MTBing where there are lambs you can sometimes end up with a little procession of them behind you.

Survival instinct?? Ha ha to me survival instinct would be not riding too quick between two sheep! odds are they will follow each other and one will have to cross your path!

And I would like to wager you on a carbon road bike coming off far worse if you hit an adult sheep at over 20mph.

Then lambs should all be killed for food then, if they are so stupid to think that anything bigger then them is their mum.
That must mean then, that if there was a big dog that could kill them, they could think it was their mum.
Stupid buggers.

Do we really need sheep?

I'm with you Bonj. Sheep should know their place in the scheme of things.
Anyway you weren't in any real danger. I mean if you had come off you would have landed on all that soft woolly stuff they have covering their bodies.
It's just a case of a farmer having a hissy fit.

The problem is that Bonj cycles like a POB, not like a cyclist, or a seriouse cyclist(which he is not)
The other weekend, i sucessfully worked out what a group of girls(about 12-13) were going to do when they saw some friends.
They were going to block the path, and the little gap on the right would be filled by one of the girls vearing over and into it.
Id worked out what these kids were going to do, much before they had done it!
Bonj obviously doesnt have the skill to be able to cycle like a seriouse cyclist.

:laugh::smile: Do i really need to explain that we need mature sheep to produce lamb?

Wool is in a fair bit more than you think.... not just dodgy cricket jerseys and christmas jumpers old folk wear!
