Ok for those with jobs with time to muck about on the internet

To be fair, it has been quite busy actually! 99% of my shifts are incredibly fast and busy! Sunday evening is always quiet! That is why I choose not to do them very often.

[QUOTE 5179254, member: 43827"]Is there nothing work related you can do? Catch up on paperwork, emails, help other colleagues?

I don't know how I used to while away the time when I had nothing to do in work before the invention of the internet and mobile phones.

Do you ever tell your managers you have no work to do and suggest they could reduce manpower levels?[/QUOTE]

My job is literally just to serve customers, whether that be face to face, phone or email. I do all of these things!

It's just classically Sunday evening is the graveyard shift. I personally think it should close earlier on Sunday! But that's my opinion.

If you go around saying that sought of thing you could find yourself out on your ear

As you could if the manager catches you not doing work ;)

In my job there is always something to do that's work-related, and if there isn't, I'll find something, or do something that is of benefit to my employer (practice on a bit of equipment or something).

Serious question to those who have been in the sort of position that Charlotte is pre-internet- what did you used to do in quiet times?

In my mind, which admittedly may be somewhat tainted by too many Enid Blyton stories, I'd be polishing the desk or otherwise making the area look presentable. If, outside of the Famous Five books, you'd actually have been reading a book or something, then I suppose use of the internet is the modern day equivalent.

Edited to fix Paulus' messed up quote tags that then messed up my reply!

Checking there wasn't a mess, be it a pile of rubbish or a pile of unfinished paperwork, left by someone else that may be blamed on me.

Then I'd make certain I'd a cuppa to hand.

Are you allowed to read? When my kids were small, i used to work 2 overnights a week in a bank call centre. Late at night it was very quiet - maybe 2 - 3 calls in an hour. I read Darwin's Origin of Species, the woman next to me was doing an OU physics degree in secret as her husband didn't believe women should be educated (hope she eventually left him, the pig) and another woman specialised in going on quiz shows and entering competitions so spent all her time swotting up general knowledge.
I could write a Kay Mellor style play!

That all sounds pretty good @Julia9054 ! I have done Sunday late shifts like twice since working here. I was doing a Coursera course on greek mythology at my old job, and I would bring in the Odyssey to read on my quiet times,

You could base it in a leisure centre!

our place basically does time an motion studies to work out how as you should move to do a job, how many units per shift and current demand to workout how many job elements you can do a day , then runs the lines faster anyway .
