About 6 weeks ago I finally replaced the calipers, front & rear, along with new pads and discs and the brakes have been perfect ever since. It would appear that the old calipers were weeping and thereby contaminating the discs with mineral oil, leading to the squealing.

Brakes are now consistently powerful and quiet.
Silence really is golden!

This fix leaves me in a, erm, fix.

Now that the problem's gone, I've changed my mind about selling it. However, having earlier resigned myself to not sorting the squealing brake problem, I'd already bought a stack of components to rebuild my stripped down old Trek 850.

I've bought new:

Headset bearing cartridges,
V-brakes, levers & cables,
Gripshifters & cables,
Chain,
Crankset (thanks to @Ajax Bay )
Bottom bracket cartridge

The front and rear mechs seem to be working fine so I'll retain those.

All I need now is a new wheelset and I'll have a backup commuter if my Nightflight ever lets me down again.

Not to sure?
@glasgowcyclist Sorry, but its sort of refreshing to read that you suffered the exact same plight as me and squealing discs. I went through everything that you did, even inspected the calliper's a number of times to look for a possible leak, wrapped them in Kleenex tisssue overnight and nothing?

In the end, and out of sure desperation I replaced the calliper's as there was nothing else to try. Hey presto....silence!!!

I held back swapping the calipers out because I thought it would need specialist tools or more skill than I had. In the end it was as simple as could be and I was kicking myself for not trying it sooner.

I keep telling my brother to follow the sage advise in this thread but he won't listen. His LBS gladly sell him spray on disc cleaners in a aerosol canisters, and he duly sprays it on at the start of every ride, and it starts well, but usually by the end of the ride it's usually squealing like a pig in a bacon factory again.
