So you do it because other vehicles treat you like gum on their shoe?
No, I stopped being an over-zealous prick acting in a holier-than-thou manner because I was pissing into the wind.

I suggest you stop trying to beat around the bush and just get on with RLJ without trying to condone it. Whilst i continue to campaign for cycling safety.
I'm not trying to condone what I do, I'm merely trying to explain why I'm happy to do it. Frankly, I couldn't give a monkey's what you think about my cycling. I've managed to get through the past 45 years of cycling on the roads without serious injury to myself or to anyone else and I doubt that your 'campaigning for cycling safety' has had any bearing on that.

And the second post in this thread was by whom?
The last time I heard a cyclist killed from a collision with a vehicle after jumping a red was errr........ I don't know. So no luck on the drawin award.

Not that I, or this, condone rljing.
This is rather amusing as you seem to be thinking one thing, when i/you type something else.

To avoid losing momentum.

OK, if it was the ONLY traffic light en-route, there would be little or no point; but add-up the time spent stopping at every light on my commute and it really racks up. The bloody things are sprouting-up everywhere with little or no thought given to their sequencing. I do not cycle through traffic lights, whatever colour is being displayed, when it's unsafe to do so. BUT, if it's safe, I'm through.

1) What is the hurry?
2) How long is your commute?
3) Doesn't this remind you of people in tin boxes who will try and save two seconds by doing an dangerous overtake?
4)If you have been cycling over 45 years have you been RLJing for 45 years? (You have answered that 15 years)

Now we are over zealous pricks pissing into the wind because we choose to obey the rules of the road...

Holier Than Art because I chose to stop at reds in respect to other road users?

Saddened to see the further decline in road standards.

Another thing I get on the (very) early morning commutes is the constant RLJing by motorists especially at Stratford which seems to be turning into bandit country at that time. This is quite a new thing...but these people see cyclists get away with it all the time and seem to copy it...with other bad behaviour...speeding mobile phones...etc etc...

It's funny how people bend the rules to suit but where does it stop?

Yes I know I get the odd bad driving but generally although I have my bad days I think it's ok.

I wonder if those who RLJ would feel the same if they were to end up sprawled on the road because they had hit/been hit by someone, car or bike?

I don't stop at red because I think that anyone else cares. I stop cos the law states that I should. I have strong feelings that the law should be enforced wherever it is broken. It doesn't matter whether it's a cyclist going through a red light, a motorist driving whilst on a mobile or a couple snogging on a beach in Dubai. The law has been broken and should be enforced.

I wonder if there is a forum similar to this where they discuss how they drove through red lights whilst on their mobiles....

And on a lighter note, not to be taken seriously but just a thought........ on here there are many typed confessions to cycling through red lights and unless those people have been extremely careful: false id's when setting up accounts; blocked ip address everytime you access etc there is a trace through to who you are through cyclechat.......

And on that note, I bid you good day :thumbsup:

It seems some RLJ'ers do it because they are in a rush, impatient which seems to be the same reasons for a lot of the bad driving I see. Drivers in a rush to get somewhere/nowhere and not willing to wait a few seconds.

Exactly, they could always leave the house 5 minutes earlier and they could then obey the traffic laws.

On a related topic which is worse a RLJ'er or a cyclist that hops on to the pavement to go around the red light?
Only ask because I'm getting fed up with overtaking them, then get to a RL they then do the said maneuvre and it all starts again.

Dislike both equally. Aside from the fact it is breaking the law, what riles me is the fact that these people aren't quick. They perform these manouvres and then just get in my way. Set off five minutes earlier or get fitter!!!

I think the people who happily jump red lights have exposed themselves for what they are on this thread:

Deeply selfish, arrogant borderline sociopaths.

The less people like that there are on the road the better. I hope they get caught and fined for it.

However it's good to know there less people like that in cars on the road, but rather on bicycles where they can cause less harm to others.

It's the moral fabric of society breaking down...they see they can get away with it that's why they do it...Now on my early morning commutes I see car drivers deliberately ignoring traffic signals as well as nothing is done (This never happened five years ago)...They see cyclists getting away with it so they copy the behaviour....

But where will this continuing trend of taking the p155 end?

It certainly is not for the better.

Has it got one of those camera things on top of the signal?

I generally flash one of my cree or whatever I have on board which is bright at the signal...I have a few temporary lights on my commute...always there.New tactic is wobble the handlebars (and light) at the signal.

If not it must be faulty....Don't know...

I have 2 or 3 like that on my commute, just treat them as broken and carefully go through.
Does this make me a serial RLJ'er?

No, looks like the traffic detector is not working or cannot detect bicycles, which means it is faulty.

I'd bet on the latter. I worked on a job in Ireland once where it cost X extra to make a set of signals responsive to cycle traffic, not surprisingly the council decided not to pursue this option

Near my flat a couple of new junctions were built, they work on microwave detectors. The first one that was built works great if you cycle up slowly in the primary position it always changes, sometimes instantaneously if there's no other traffic. The other junction which was built relatively recently, defaults to green for a supermarket exit and bikes on the main road are never detected. After 9pm when the supermarket is shut and there's no other traffic to trigger the sensors I've took to jumping the lights
