My old Boardman looked lovely but up close the gear cables rubbed away the white paint to bare metal. My current bike is Specialized which I got second hand. Its black which helps but also has some black oval stickers placed exactly where you would expect the cables to rub. Et voilà, no cable rub! Anyone know if these stickers have a specific name? Want to buy some more but not sure what to google and LBS closed today.

Helicopter tape? I think the ones I bought had a name like that.

An alternative to the patches, which are effective, these are also effective

One of my bikes came with something similar, but not this specific product.
I got something similar from Decathlon but didn't want to remove the cables just to get them on so ended up having to slit them the whole length. I've just got some of these - http://www.fibrax.com/Spiral-Frame-Protector-Black - and am trying them out. You just wrap them around where you want them to go.

If you go into a bike shop and ask for some frame protector stickers they'll know what you mean. Lizard Skins is a brand name I think. They come in clear so doesn't matter what colour you're bike is. In the mean time, electrical tape works.

These are actually completely ineffective. I know you may say this worked for you, but they don't work. Frame rub happens from a soft material rubbing against the harder paint. The mechanism is that grit embeds in the soft material and then slides against the frame. Think sandpaper - grit stuck to soft paper.
Therefore, if the cable with its soft sleeve moves against the paint, the grit sticks to the silicone and slides on the paint, causing the paint to wear away.
The only effective way is to add a sacrificial layer to the paint, as with a sticker of sorts.

Bit of electrcal (insulating ) tape does the job. Comes in lots of colours and cheep as chips. Once it gets tatty or starts to wear easily peels off for replacement but is surprisingly hard wearing.
Works for me, but i am a bit of a cheapskate!

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Loads on ebay - google 'frame protection stickers'. The cheap ones are usually quite thin, I like the blingy 'carbon' ones, but you can find ones in a colour to match your frame - with chainstay protectors too. Otherwise helicopter tape, or insulation tape.

Not sticky enough if you ride in all weathers, imo at least.

Not sure if they still do them, but Halfords had some good ones under their Bikehut brand, quite thick, with a jelly like texture, and a lot tougher than most of the tape type ones I've tried.
