Have been riding for 4 months now and really enjoying it. I normally put my hand up or a quick "good morning" etc when passing other riders along our country lanes. I have noticed people riding touring or mountain bikes will nearly always acknowledge with Hello or similar, the same cannot be said for race / road bikers, the times I have been blanked is amazing, its almost as if I have intruded on their ride. Is it better I don't acknowledge other folk ?

Just enjoy your ride. There are probably plenty of animals to look out and say hello to if you want an alternative.

[tongue-in-cheek mode] You can't win with roadies. If you aren't one, you get ignored. If you are one, but your bike's better than theirs, they pretend not to have seen you and you get ignored. If you are one and your bike's worse than theirs, they look down on you and you get ignored. If you are one and your bike's the same as theirs, they realise theirs isn't as unique as they thought and you get ignored. [/tongue-in-cheek mode]

I'm a head nodding roadie but get blanked by some mtb riders - it works both ways.

Well im a roadie and MTB'er, i'll wave at anyone!

Seriously, I also do a fair bit walking to and always greet people along the way. Mostly you get an acknowledgement, but sometimes im greeted with a strange look as if to say why are you talking to me whne you dont know me.

Why does no-one ever smile at me, huh? I'd be more than happy to smile back. Hell, I'd even add a "Good morning"

And for heaven's sake, Never Overtake One.

I use road, MTB and hybrid bikes... while I say hi or nod to anyone, have to agree that it's more often roadies who don't acknowledge...

The worst evils I've had have been from dog-walkers and horse riders when off-roading, even though I am religious about only riding on bridleways and not using footpaths, stopping when a horse approaches, and using the bell when approaching a blind corner.
