Long retired mechanic , very few made it to the first mot at 3 year old . Traffic light start commonly led to Bulk head separation.

On hindsight, most of the alternatives weren't much better back then.

A friend of my Dad's ended up in a hedge when a rear suspension mount pulled out of the bodywork on a 3 or 4 year old Talbot Sunbeam. I remember MKIV Cortinas with broken chassis around the rear suspension at 5 or 6 year old.

Odd… my mind immediately went to an Italian car as well… a Lancia Beta coupe, but it does say something about them doesn’t it.

IIRC, Lancia's reputation in the UK was so bad, they actually stopped importing cars here. I also remember a Fiat Strada that was about 9 months old coming into a tyre company I worked for. It was absolutely riddled with rust, the roof was the worst. Transpires Fiat gave the owner all their money back (save a token amount) and let her keep the car, saying it must have missed its rust proofing at the factory.

The thing with the Italians is they make/design (pretty much) the best looking cars, scooters and cycles but the build quality isn't always the greatest.

Yep, they had excellent 5 speed boxes, discs that really worked and handled better than any escort. ^_^

Astonishing. The same car pictured just weeks earlier!

I have a Vespa in the garage that has had 18 years of all weather use on Ontario’s well salted roads and it looks like new. I simply don’t understand it!

my friend‘s Fiat 124 Sport made up for it though… I swear you could hear that thing making crackling noises in the night as it rapidly converted itself into brown dust.
