Yep some Doppler there but what I don't get from a physics perspective is why the car is first short, then long. That's not relativity as I understand it.

It represents the short and long wavelengths of the colours and the sound.

And dwell a bit more on the theory and you'll see why the car is foreshortened as it approaches and lengthened when it's moving away...

Oh hang on, that isn't right at all. Foreshortening is due to relative velocity not whether its approaching or receding (isn't it?). Admittedly it's over 35 years since I studied it properly

Agree - I'd missed that aspect of the picture. That's a mistake I think

Not all people on this forum have the same background knowledge, such as the Doppler effect and football team strips. In cases like this there isn't a joke to ruin for them. If other people find it tedious then that's their problem.
