Any moth experts on here?

Just wondering who this beauty is who's currently on a wall outside the house. No luck with Google and my wildlife book has a fairly good moth section but nothing seems to match so I'm wondering if it's something unusual. It's about 1.5 inches / 3.8 cm long so quite a big one. Pic attached with 20p for scale.

What did moths bump into before light bulbs (or lamps) were invented? I wonder if there are thousands of moths on the way to the sun, 'c'mon it will be worth it when we get there!'

Pine hawk looks right! Never heard of that one before.thanks @midlife and @MikeG .
The Brecks is just up the road with its pine woodlands so I guess he/she flew in from there.

Elephant hawk moth and they are indeed large as far as moths go. Lovely vivid colours on them.
