Just an update, I have been mulling over buying the Boardman ADV 8.9,
so I looked at the geometry, it is literally only millimeters different from
my road bike regarding fit, other than a more upright position,
this pushed me investigate further.
So, I contacted Boardman, and want to inform anyone who is looking
at this bike, that, IT IS NOT MADE OF 7005 ALLOY as shown on Halfords
site, it is made of 6061 aluminum, which clinches it for me.
I can tell the difference in ride quality between the 6061 and the same frame
in 7005, I worked with aluminum for a long time, and 6061 stands up better
to the elements, and in large tube format will be equally as strong as 7005.
The larger tires on this bike will also take pressure off the frame, thus
it should hold up very well on rougher surfaces, and heavy input.
will be seeing it in the flesh tomorrow, crunch time.

Bit late to the fray but my club mate can keep up on ries on his CX on slicks, its all about the engine

Yes, the engine is important, but you need the gears too.
I have been watching some cyclists lately, some pedal
like crazy on the same flat routes that others find a nice
gear and patter along leaving them in the background,
both cyclist are similar age, similarly experienced, I would
be more like the slower cadence guy, until I hit a hill and
then the gears shift and I spin, we are all different.

I do like the look of the Boardman CX though,
even more visible in colour,
but for my job, I would then have to replace the tyres at extra cost,
then there is the real possibility the CX would not be
a as good at putting in the miles because of its gears and my slower
cadence preference, it is also made of 7005 which is more suited to
the kind of stresses a CX bike will get, but not my favorite alloy.

For some reason Boardman keep sending me emails, with a link to their website that confirms what you have been told.
The thing I don't understand on the blurb about the bike is it states

  • FSA Omega Adventure, Mega Exo, 48/32t and underneath
  • 50/34t
The 48/32t seems good to me maybe the 50/34t is an option.

https://www.boardmanbikes.com/gb_en/products/2138-adv-8.9.html
I will know tomorrow when I see the bike, I will even count the teeth.
Halford's have it down as a 48 / 32, but they have the back down as a 12 /28
where Boardman have it down as a 11 / 32.

I doubt it will have a 50 / 34 on it, with the weight of the bike and the taller
tire that would sap you quickly.

I went and looked at the ADV today, Looks great, almost luminous, very bright orange.
Just as I expected weight ways,
wheels are hung off centre, must have something to do with the disk brakes,
which was not the case on my last bike, where the spokes were laced from the centre
of the rim to the hub, my old bike had bulged out stays to allow for the disk, where
this one is narrow as can be, If I tell it as it is, the tires are a little wide for the rims,
the rims are no very wide at all.

I can confirm it has 48 / 34 chain rings and 11 / 32 back, just as Boardman's site states.
Halfords have the back as being 12 / 28 which is not the case.

in any event, I will be taking the bike, but am trying to get discount organized,
am told AXA insurance points card will work, as will Cycling GB, but cycling gb
want id that I can not provide, different paperwork here, so at the moment am
kind of stuck for discount options, yes, I can buy discount coupons, but they are
sold in Sterling, and I have euro so will loose out with transaction and currency
difference.

:thanks:
Nothing major, poor cable management which has marked the fork on one side after less than 3 weeks :-(
That's typical of Boardman, mine the same. I rapidly applied helicopter tape. Indeed, Happens with most bikes regardless of brand, who built it. Bikes should wear their battle scars with pride, shows it's being used :okay:

Had a bit of a fright yesterday after going out after cleaning and lubing my chain ( I actually did it a few days ago and already ridden over 50 miles), started to get a bit grindy and squeaky after about 10 miles, looked at the front big chain ring when I got home and was convinced that it had worn, (done around 400 miles in 2 1/2 weeks) until coming across a post on here that pointed out that the teeth arent all the same shape and sizes to assist with gear changes.
I believe the noise was down to lack of lube, using muc off dry by the way.
