Any ouch! moments this year?

On Saturday I had my most major off this year. Coming back from a village pub as the sun was setting, I put up a hand as a gesture of thanks to the driver behind me - who had changed his mind about overtaking me as another car approached - at the same time as I hit a pothole. A 3 1/2 hr visit to A&E revealed no broken or cracked bones, but a bruised hip and cuts to an elbow and a knee and a chest injury I need to monitor. (BTW How do bodies get damaged with no sign showing on the clothes above the injury?!) I had the surreal experience of watching Casualty on TV as I waited, and ended up discussing bikes with the consulting Nurse Practitioner. (Nice guy - should have got his name and number to see if he wanted to pair up for a ride some time.)

As I have been out on a bike every day so far this year, I may try to go to the pub for a pint to keep up the challenge.

I'm glad it was not to serious for you buddy but still painful no doubt for you. I been lucky this year ( touch wood ) with no accidents to speak of. I've had a couple of near misses with a car and a bus to which I put a complaint in to the bus company. The driver had a formal warning for his bad driving. Hope you make a speedy recovery buddy :-)

Gws @Jon George . I had my first off this year thankfully no damage to bike or me . Was doing a charity ride in dreadful conditions pouring rain and on a winding descent I pushed it too much and ran out of road and put the bike into a hedge and over the bars but thankfully landed on the nice soft verge

I had a bit of a moment today while riding in London with @jefmcg . Car in front slammed on the anchors at a zebra crossing, luckily I managed to stop in time! Rear wheel lifted but no impact. Who says v brakes don't work well on a road bike ! Luckily it was bone dry!!

When running a couple of weeks ago I fell over whilst running along the pavement. I can only assume I tried to step off the curb, but ended up hitting the deck like a block of flats

I'm glad it wasn't worse and hope you heal quickly.

I can report falling into a ford early in the year which left me wet through, cold and bruised but the most memorable ouch moment of the year was when a wasp got into my helmet, buzzed around a bit then dropped down inside my shirt and stung me in the middle of the back as I pulled over. Not fun.

Had my only off on August Bank Holiday, slippy corner and back end slipped out, recovered it only to flip over the other way. Result a few scrapes, 3 cracked ribs and a smashed up helmet. Thankfully bike was ok apart from a bit of bar tape. Took 6 weeks to recover.

Only off for me so far this year was on ice last Monday.

It was the least unpleasant fall I've ever had, nothing at all really.

I suppose that's thanks to the slow speed and zero friction when I hit the ground.

No off but an annoying pain behind my right knee that just doesn't seem to want to go away. First got it when trying to clip out after my pedals had got muddy so used some real force. Now it's just there, constantly looking to surprise me

Postscript: I went to the pub ... by bike. (And thanks for the good wishes, folks.)

FYI It was easier cycling to and from the pub, than walking to and from the bar ...

Pain behind the knee can be due to a saddle which is too high.

That may not be the cause in your case, but lowering the saddle a bit will reduce pressure at the back of the knee so may help the strain or whatever it is heal.

Pain at the front of the knee usually indicates a saddle which is too low, so you will need to be careful not to transfer the problem from one side of your knee to the other.

Well, I snapped my clavicle last year, with no surface damage. I think my shoulder hit the ground and the compression force broke the bone.

I did end up with a huge bruise, but not at the contact point, but halfway along my shoulder - under my bra strap - where the broken end of the clavicle tried to push it's way out through my shoulder.

This year had been a better one.
