Thanks. I get fed up with sweet foods after a while despite generally having a sweet tooth. On my only 12 hour TT the tuna sandwich I had after finishing having eaten nothing but sweet stuff all day was like the finest food ever created (although the rice pudding in ice cream cones someone was handing out went down a treat). I never take on enough food or drink in a road marathon which is probably why I can never get much beyond 20 miles before having to walk / run. One of the appeals of doing an ultra is that I know I'll be walking a lot so can eat real food. I've been thinking of doing potatoes roasted in honey with plenty of salt on them and cutting them up and marmite sandwiches cut up small were good on one marathon I did. I've also found I prefer Voom bars to gels if I need a quick sugar burst.

Worth trying the Maurten stuff. It's outrageously expensive but has a fairly neutral taste rather than being super sweet.

Rice pudding always goes down well as you say.

Salted nuts or crisps can be good too.

Yeap it's all in there fueling.

Ear eat and eat some more.

Flapjack, pork pies, Belgian buns, Cornish pasties donuts, hot dogs, chips, have all been eaten on fell races!

Also good kit, it gets cold at night. 88 miles into Leeds Liverpool canal race;😢

My sister did 50k utmb race so I'm sure you can do it!

I've got a big stash of it, I prefer it to most other gels and energy drink but even with that I struggle after 2 or 3 of them and find myself deciding to go without rather than have another (the drink is also really thick). I should probably offload them to someone as they did cost a small fortune. The Voom bars work well as I can just break a chunk off and leave it to dissolve in my mouth. I know a lot of people like Tailwind for their drinks so might try that beforehand.

I was surprised how cold and windy it got on the way up Tor y Foel at around 11pm on Saturday when I was support running especially when it had been around 30 degrees all day and my car (parked back in the valley) was still showing 24 degrees when I got back to it at 2.30am. My friend said he should have listened to me when I suggested getting a jacket on as he found the next section of his 100 miler the toughest with some hallucinations which he put down partly to getting cold.

My cousin is an ambassador for Tailwind and gave me a load of sachets of their drink powder. TBH I found them pretty sickly and prefer my usual Hi5 or SIS. The Beta fuel powder sachets are worth trying. They're quite a thick texture and almost like a milkshake but go down ok and give you 80g carbs per bottle. It works well if you have one of those and then a plain water bottle or one with just an electrolyte tab.

The problem with caffeinated stuff is I worry it will keep me going in other ways too!
