If I'm buying new tyres, I generally just go for Marathons and be done with it - as I cant be arsed fixing too many punctures as it detracts from the enjoyment of riding.
However, I also have a motley collection of secondhand tyres that have come from used bikes that I've acquired. I never throw away tyres with any wear left in them unless they are so bad they will disintegrate. I don't care how shabby they look, or if I end up running a mismatched pair front and rear, they get used on my hack bikes. I still don't want regular punctures though, so for these sort of tyres, liners make sense as they can be moved from tyre to tyre as they get worn out and changed for other secondhand ones.
