Looks like Dionne Warwick isn't a Cilla fan either (taken from Wiki so, you know...)
Despite the international success and recognition of Warwick's original version, the besting in Great Britain by Black's version has long been a sore point with Warwick. In a 1995 edition of Great Performances which saluted Burt Bacharach, Warwick stated that Black's version of "Anyone Who Had a Heart" replicated Warwick's to the point where had Warwick coughed while recording her vocal for the original track or had that track's organist hit a wrong note, those features would have been present on Black's cover. In fact – whether intentionally - Black's version features distinctly different lyrics on the chorus than those recorded by Warwick or are standard for the song. Also, arranger Johnny Pearson utilized a bassoon solo for the instrumental break in Black's version as opposed to the saxophone utilized in the Warwick original.

Cilla Black's high notes, headache inducing and possibly damaging to those under 18. Has to be Dusty followed by Dionne. When Cilla sings softly it's not bad but when she lets rip...eek.
I certainly wouldn't want to be in a room with Cilla letting rip - her singing is bad enough - without her flatulating as well!

Dionne Warwick is bigging up her Christmas Album and, as usual, has a sly dig at Our National Treasure, Cilla Black (searches for Union Jack smiley).

Well, listen up, Dionne. Cilla's version of Anyone Who Had a Heart is way, way better than yours. It's got range, it's got passion, and it's got a voice. Yours sounds like it was recorded in a cardboard box. That's why nobody in this country listens to yours. In fact your version isn't even as good as Dusty Springfield's. And just to prove it, we're going to have a poll. And woe betide any CCer who votes for Dionne Warwick.

Erm... well... I... err... it's like this, you see... what I'm trying to say is...

Besides, although Cilla's has a certain shameless oomph about it, I can't quite get past the vowel sound on "untroooooooo". I might also add, by way of hoping to change the subject slightly, that Shirley Bassey's version is disappointing.

you see, that's what I find so unimpressive about Dionne Warwick. She sounds like she needs a cup of tea to pep her up a bit.

Dusty is a lot more right-on but I actually prefer Miss Black's version. I never thought I'd admit to that.

Cilla's Anyone Who Had a Heart was the only song my father used to sing.
That and the advert ditty for Esso Blue ("Bu-bu-bu-bum Esso Blue").

Mine used to sing the Esso one that went 'the Esso sign means happy motoring, happy motoring, happy motoring, the Esso sign means happy motoring, look for the Esso sign'. That and 'The Most Beautiful Girl in the World' by Charlie Rich.

Ahem. As you were.

love that song... it was one of the few singles we had before me and my siblings started telling mum and dad what music they should be buying.

Yeah my dad loved it and then spookily enough years later Charlie Rich became one of my favourites, interesting chap and quite brilliant in lots of music styles, rock and roll, country, blue eyed soul, and even *shudder* jazz.
