Interesting view that we should be free to commit crimes at Christmas  How much will it be likely to cost him to get it back?

150 quid plus 20 quid a day storage. He can only get it after getting it insured too, so you can add that cost.

Regardless of what he does with the car he's also got a court appearance.

Excellent story and more power to your elbow CC uninsured drivers are a scum that needs removing from the roads. Took me years through MIB after one of them wrote my car off.

I clicked on this thread with a feeling of foreboding, thinking you were also married to my wife but imagine my delight when I read what you'd done. Chapeau!

I mate of mine got stopped driving without insurance, the copper sat with him until he purchased insurance on his ipad, He still got the points on his licence and a fine, so there must be some flexibility in the system

Plenty of 'likes' on this post CC. One from me too.

Try posting it on a 'car/motoring/petrolhead forum. I bet you'd get taken apart.

I've see on some of the 'follow the police around' tv shows people be allowed to buy insurance if they are stopped at home for it to save time etc of seizing the car.

I doubt that very much! I would describe myself as a sort of petrolhead, and most people I know have no time for uninsured drivers either. They cost us extra money on our premiums to pay for damage done by uninsured drivers, and as has already been said, if your car gets hit by an uninsured driver then you are forced to make a claim on your own policy. If you only have third party insurance, then you are up the creek without a paddle.

No-one likes being robbed blind by insurance companies; but if you can't afford to run a car - don't drive.

This appears to be a big problem now with "some" drivers (I like most cyclists am a driver too). Just the general anachy and mindset that if they do get caught doing something wrong it's a persecution of their right to be on the road. I was in my highstreet the other day and a significant number of drivers were on their phones, one guy using a iPad! It'll take a long time to change this attitude, we are getting there on drink driving and I think turned the corner on seatbelts but consider the effort and time taken to address these issues

Maybe you're right, but overhearing conversations of others as regards to the worth of the police as regards to motoring offences makes me wonder.

Folk find it financially advantageous to drive old bangers without insurance because the financial hit of having the car seized and the ensuing fine is less than a few months' premiums.

When fines become cripplingly expensive and non payment aggressively pursued by bailiffs then folk will have second thoughts about taking to the road illegally.
