Apparently it's our fault

So the congestion charge has not worked?
Perhaps more people should take to commuting by bike which in turn would take more cars off the roads and cabs would not be in such great demand, maybe even take an odd bus off the roads too, win win all round.
How can it possibly be the cyclists fault when cyclists are helping to ease the congestion and cut down on pollution whilst they are doing so?

It does provide a 5 minute diversion upclicking the pro cyclist responses and downclicking the motorist ones. More fun than I'd normally get out of the heil.

The story is based on traffic surveys by Transport for London/consultants, remarks made in the London Assembly and by Lord Lawson, and some figures from the Department of Transport.

Shooting the messenger - as always - spectacularly misses the point.

And if you look a bit closer, part of the Mail story is a lift from the Sunday Times.

So the hard of thinking on here ought to be having a go at the Sunday Times as well as the Mail.

Not to mention the other news outlets which are also probably carrying the same story.

Meanwhile, what could be a valid discussion on the shared use of road space will have to happen elsewhere.

Just love my new diesel Range Rover...so easy to jet wash cyclists off the front bumper"

At least it's nice to know that self-gratification artists like this are getting all :cursing: over the delays.

The daily Mail is not known for printing news worthy articles at the best of times hence the somewhat flippant reply from myself, as for the "hard of thinking" remark, well as Mrs brown would say "thats nice"!

There's some similar crap in today's Sunday Times as Pale Rider mentions above. Its a spectacularly stupid article - all about traffic in some cities now being slower than ever and pointing the finger firmly at cycle lanes taking up road space that should of course be for cars. Apparently cycling is causing pollution. And I think in London only about 3% of roads have segregated cycle lanes and yet magically, they are responsible for the city's traffic grinding to a halt

I think councils altering traffic light timings are probably creating more congestion than any number of cyclists. There are traffic lights on a major arterial road near me that only let 6 to 8 cars through at a time, causing horrendous congestion (there appears to be no reason for this as traffic lights before and after them have considerably longer green phases).
I'm surprised that the media haven't picked up on that - or maybe it doesn't suit their agenda?

Just the same old moans some made when they narrowed the road to make room for bus lanes.
I had some slight sympathy with the anti bus lane brigade. After all, a 35 foot long vehicle that's 3/4 empty is a frightful waste of a bus lane. Perhaps not such a common sight in London, but all too common in provincial towns.

What's 'news worthy' is a matter of opinion, to which, of course, we are all entitled.

The article cites Uber taxis, online delivery vans, the general rise in traffic, building work in London, and space given over to cycle lanes as the cause of increased congestion.

One might criticise that as a statement of the bleedin' obvious, but it seems fair to me.

I think half empty buses and black cabs, not to mention Addison Lee, minicabs etc in London contribute to congestion especially in rush hour, not private cars. They are gridlocking the suburbs and the M25!

On the upside, the congestion forces everybody to drive slowly. The police are going to have to lower the speed limit to 10 nanometres per hour if they want to continue to afford good donuts.
