Appliances: Longevity no more

Following on from my interesting shower thread and Rich's chutney thread, here is my appliance thread which nicely compliments Skoly's kids thread and reinforces the, things ain't like they used to be, theme, including wine and memories if we encompass Cubist's excellent wine thread.

Six years ago, if my fuzzy inexactitude is correct and it's normally correct within the fuzzy boundaries I set, we moved into a new house and bought a lot of stuff new, as you do when rip everything out and start again. During that time, the dishwashers has broken, two wine coolers are now switched off because the fan has become too noisy. The oven broke once, the boiler pump broke recently, the induction hob has broken twice, involving several visits of a useless engineer who didn't even listen to what I told him and fixed the wrong fault. The coffee machine leaked once and the microwave has broken twice, latterly at the wknd and my faithful microwave engineer in Deeside, just off ncn 5, so all those on the Llandudno ride cycled past him, has fixed it again. I have doubts about the veracity of the washing machine too, which sounds like it's taxiing for take off when spinning. I have become quite an expert at getting stuff fixed now but honestly, some of this stuff lasts less time than a pair of modern socks, which I also once started a thread on. And don't get me started on undies or the state of M&S essentials these days.

Hmmmm, no. Two Miele and the rest a mixture of purebred and mongrel.

Things ain't what they used to be, but also luckily they don't cost as much in real terms as they used to either. Although to be fair you do have Miele which should do.

We've got an Hitachi fridge/freezer that is over 35 years old and is still like new.
I didn't even know Hitachi made em but Maz had owned it for 15 years before we met and has been waiting for it to break for ages but it just keeps working (frost free too)

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
I don't have a wine cooler either. Then again I don't any wine. You must be very unlucky. My washing machine is 9 years old, as is my microwave. My fridge freezer is 16 years old. My freezer is 16 years old as well. My TV is 9 years old as well.

I suspect Mrs Crackle is sabotaging the appliances cos she fancies some new ones.

In the Nickyboy household:

Washing Machine - just replaced as it was making a fearful racket. Did 15 years of daily washes
Microwave - now relegated to "second microwave" as we have a fancy integral one too. The second microwave is going fine and is about 25 years old
Dishwasher - just got a new one for the revamped kitchen but the old one worked fine for 12 years. Just one hose leak in that time I think
Cooker - again got a fancy new one but the one we threw out was about 20 years old and was working fine
Never had a problem with fridges or freezers

If appliances don't break down in the first few months, they're good for years

Maybe it's because you buy 'nice' stuff? "More to go wrong" as my mum would say.

My washer is 10 years old. I bought it because it was the cheapest one at the nearest place to my new flat that sold washers, and I'd had to borrow a hatchback off a friend to get it home so didn't want to shop around. It is on most days (although admittedly it wasn't when I lived alone) and although the OH has announced it's demise on several occasions, there has never been anything wrong with it apart from me not putting the filter back in properly and (very occasionally) the dial goes around and it doesn't wash.

My microwave is even older - I bought that for a previous flat after moving out from the house I shared with the ex. That was bought because it was the one on offer in the local Tesco, and had a grill function which I thought might be useful and have never used. I paid £50. It still works, and always has worked.

The Dyson at work is a retired one from home (OH wanted an upright) and is 13 years old, and although I've stripped it down to clean out the cyclones twice in that time, it's all original bar the filters, and still works a treat. And I still maintain that cyclinders are much better than uprights.

My Miele washing machine has done 10 years probably got another 90 in it as its only for one.
Recently I read on Money saving expert that you are entitled to a repair even if you are outside your guarantee period. IE everything should last a reasonable period of use relative to a product expected life. So a washing machine that breaks down after its one year guarantee should still be repaired free. Sorry cannot remember how it works. Anyone? You will have look that up yourself.
