i think we can safely say that srw's views are exactly what has turned normal work for the average person into a corporate hellhole of overpaid HR departments taking the piss.

I still favour the old fashioned style of management and if you don't like it you can clock out and fcuk off...

Nah, you've got to use the full battery of HR tools, then throw in a few systems with cool acronyms. Once you've got it fully installed in the workplace you can then employ the same tactics with your family. I'd like to see a 5 year olds responses to, where do you see yourself in 5 years time:biggrin:

It's a bit more complicated than that...

Yeah right, you really do buy in to all this crap:ohmy:

It's a model. Provided you know their limitations and don't implement them slavishly, models are usually useful. Unfortunately the people who understand that fact are few and far between. Fortunately our HR department do understand it. It's our accounting and finacne teams who don't...

Yes, but the truth is that the few that do understand, and utilise them correctly, would be doing a good job without these tools. The abuse and misuse of these tools is far more prevalent and, IMO, outweighs the benefits. The first time I came across a fully fledged appraisal system I bought into it fully. I thought it was a great idea but then my mind works like that. After 25 years of experience of a variety of such tools I no longer consider them in this way.

Appraisee and appraiser..ffs
To break it down for my guys I just tell em to write down three things.
What they did well, what they struggled with and what help they need.

Christ, that's nothing. SMART objectives are the tip of the iceberg. I've had to RACI, SWOT and PESTLE everything in sight. ;)

I was once asked to include 'horizon scanning' in a report. By someone who said it with a straight face. Others nodded approvingly. I suspect the expression on my face was career limiting...

Two objectives eh?

- Learn to play the ukulele then give an impromptu rendition of Ace of Spades.

- Breed a dog so large it can be ridden as a horse, then ride it as a horse.
