Are cantilever and caliper brake PADS interchangeable?

I know the levers aren't but is there any reason why you can't put cantilever brake pads on brake calipers? As far as I can see they just apply pressure to the rim.

I have TRP CX9's Mini-V's that are supplied with road pads - swapped them out for 72mm Ashima 4 Function pads.

AFAIK interchangeable. Maybe clearance issues when opening brakes to eg change tyre?

In my experience, BMX pads are softer, but work OK if they have a similar fitting.

I think it's all about the fittings and clearances... I know some early V-brakes take cantilever (grooved post) pads and can't take threaded-post-and-washers pads sold for modern V-brakes :rolleyes: and that I hate setting up brakes that use grooved post pads :laugh:
