Er - the Renmimbi/Pound exchange rate is exactly the same as it was four years ago.

I buy materials from a co which imports it from China. A lump of it has gone up from £150 to £200 in the last 2 years. Maybe it is down to transport costs rising,, maybe it is because of currency fluctuations which haven't filtered back down. It may be because of rising labour costs in China. All I do know is that companies with huge shops are being squeezed now as they can't compete with the web on anything other than convenience.

they are different markets surely? especially when it comes to trabbs. they JJB dont sell the tat that sports direct do.
I agree that Sports Direct is largely responsible for JJBs decline and I wouldn't be putting a lot of money on JD Sports really. Although Sports Direct do sell a lot of tat, they also sell some of the decent stuff too. I buy my Puma and Adidas trainers from SD. They also recognise the market. Your 6 year old might *want* a £100 Nike football but he'll be just as happy kicking a £5 SD football over next door's fence never to be seen again.

apparently JJB sports didnt have a defined market.

If you want pile it high sell it cheap you go to Sports Direct
If you want the more designer end of the market you go to JD sports, or Nike store etc.

JJB sat in the middle with no real USP. Not exclusive enough for the designer fans and not cheap enough for the bargain shoppers.

This^^

Mr Wigan knew it.

Perhaps the simplest explanation is correct: the UK economy is not strong enough to sustain as many shops? Particularly those selling non-essentials.

Since returning from 6 months away, I have the impression that many shops in York no longer carry the stock levels that they once did.

this is the ad truty
times have changed, clothes and sports clothing shops have just become (in my opinion) big changing rooms to try on stuff. then, get online and order it cheaper. sign of the times.

this is the cold truth.

So its all over the news that JJB have gone in to Administration with the loss of thousands of jobs,so is it just poor management or a declining economy that have closed it?Or my theory is because the chavs have taken sports wear as their choice of fashion this has led to the everyone else not to wear it:laugh:

They were for the decline of the JJB in Accrington! They were always congregating at the bottom of the escalator preventing folk who wanted to use the thing to get to the store. On more than one occasion they broke the thing by jamming something into it.Pity chavs can't be liquidated like businesses!:headshake:

I quite like SportsDirect for my running gear, relatively cheap technical tops that tend to double up as my cycling wear too and quite a large range of decent trainers.

To be honest I've had some good running kit from sports direct. Occasionally they get some Karrimor in which can be pretty good. The kids stuff is cheap. The speed they grow at I won't be buying expensive gear, even sports gear for use several times a week, when they'll be grown out of well before they're warn out.
