on tablet at the moment, not sure how to get it to quote.....

@avalon... my kids are well aware what xmas and easter means to christians and that we don't believe the same things, but as far as they're concerned xmas they get presents and easter they get eggs, and thats just what happens at xmas and easter......... why?, because I want to give them presents etc and believe it or not but just because I don't believe in religious mumbo jumbo, it doesn't make me some ogre, and I have no intentions of my children missing out.......
Ah, of course. it's about the children. How stupid of me.

I loved R.E even in Catholic schools, I just found it all fascinating. I didn't believe a word but loved learning about what others believed oh and I loved the stories. Still love the stories still fascinated by beliefs.
Of course its a long time since I was at school but the few Modern R.e lessons I have seen also fascinate me. Love it:angel:
Religion, any religion, no matter what your views on it are, is a fascinating subject for anyone who has an interest in history and culture because it is so much a part of those things.

yes I'm afraid it is.........it really is as simple as "it's about the children" if it wasn't for the commercialism of these 2 events, and the ingrainness of them in todays world, I would treat them as I do Yam Kippur or ramadan etc as non-events...
I do understand why people do it for their children. It's unfortunate that the two festivals have become so commercialised, both for believers, who's celebrations have been hijacked by people who have no understanding or respect for what they are doing and for non-believers who are under immense financial pressure to spoil their kids.

...not forgetting the 'believers' who are under immense financial pressure perhaps, and the non-believers who are not etc.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
I thought the origins of what is now called Christmas were pre Christian anyway, so why shouldn't atheists celebrate the winter solstice, and the birth of the sun. Likewise Easter - essentially a pagan celebration of fertility - and isn't it about time the date of Easter was fixed and the law changed so that the majority of citizens in this country were not forced to observe outdated and irrelevant laws as to what they might choose to do on Easter Sunday (and Christmas Day)?
