Apologies all round, IMO a proper discussion about religion/politics is too edgy in the Cafe. I'm out.

I was recently asked to take part in Islam Awareness Week for the Islamic Society of Britain. The theme was 'Things We Have in Common'. My friend and I were featured in this article on our shared common interest of Cycling.

I liked your in-depth knowledge of the Boris bikes system, Maz - 'I've never used it' and 'I think you get the first 30 minutes free'. Quality!

No, but I am a Christian believer who attends church most weeks. I rebelled when I was a teenager and had nothing to do with God until he gave me a huge wake up call on my 40th birthday, bringing me down big time before building me up to where I am today, the happiest I've ever been with far more in my life now than I could ever have dreamed of 12 years ago.

If you are not religious then what exactly do you do at church? Do you abstain from songs of worship and prayer?

And surely a belief in a God goes hand in hand with a religious persuasion of some kind?

Not being funny but I just do not get that.

I thought it was about oil and power and I wasn't aware that the two great wars of the 20th century were religious crusades.

Perhaps another way of looking at it could be that what completely baffles us non religious types is why on earth anyone would be prepared to die for, or kill others in the name of one god or another? There are thousands of gods that people worship in the world, and yet it always just seems like one big pi$hing contest between the followers of each of them about which one is the best. I'll never be able to fathom that one out, especially when innocent folk get caught up in the crossfire.
