Aren't "hipsters" on "fixies" cyclists too?

I'm at a loss to understand why some of us (us cyclists that is) are singled-out for derision and scorn because of the way they are dressed and their choice of bike.

Are newcomers only welcome if they conform to what the self-appointed "proper" cyclists have arbitrarily decided is "right"?

Would you prefer them to be driving cars?

Isn't it just jealousy: they're young, they're beautiful, they're fashionable? Things which are, for most of us, just a memory.

Totally agree JTW:thumbsup:
We all use our bikes to make a statement, from the serious Audax'er on his steel steed to the Skinny Racing Whippet on his carbon confection, and the Baggy Arsed BMX'er and the Downhill Warriors.

I love 'em all, and see us all as one big happy band of obsessed cyclists, and hope one day to amass enough bikes to fit into each pigeon hole^_^

I scorn hipsters. As I would spurn a rabid dog. Well the tragic ones anyway. Or, at least, the tragic hipsters that can't ride their bikes properly. I'm old enough not to be keen on the fact they use dreadful Americanisms and call their fixed bikes 'fixies' either. Nor am I a big fan of fakengers. Bikes as fashion accessories and style icons. Tribalism. Well it takes all sorts I suppose.

But here is the thing ...

If someone, say like me, is a **** because I don't like certain people then just because I ride a bicycle doesn't make me less of a **** does it?

Hackney, Haggerston, but rarely Homerton.
Hurricanes hardly ever happen.

Really ? Ive not seen anybody ridiculed for what they ride or how they dress .

Oh.... I'm surprised. It does happen on this forum.

Much scorn has been passed on 'fakengers' and the like in the time I've been on this forum. There seems to be a view in one element of our contributors that they are 'just cycling because it's in vogue'.

It is sometimes added (as though it is a point with any merit) that as soon as fixies fall out of fashion they'll drop cycling and jump to the next craze.

I'm with JtW on this. We are all cyclists.

There are a lot of people raving about cycling today who were not riding three years ago and will not be riding in three years.

That's life. Whether they're fixie-fakengers, lycra missiles or bowler-hatted Brompton commuters, it is their right to get into and out of a hobby. We are one, big happy family.

:gun:

Full of love.
