That's a big cassette on the back. I know there's no 22 ring but Leadville must be very steep for him to need those ratios.

Yeah true, altitude does make a big difference.

When I was mtb'ing in the mountains in Canada (5500ft base, up to 9000ft), I felt like I'd just started cycling again I was getting out of breath so quickly.

Steep climbs: serious descents. 7 mile climb to the 50 mile turnaround at 12,600 ft. Approximately 14,000’ elevation gain. Greater than 65% average finish rate under the 12 hour limit. Excellent support stations.[/SIZE]
Ran support for this race back in the mid-90's once. These guys aren't human. Another good one is Montezuma's Revenge. Which sadly appears to be struggling these days....
