I don't think there is a comeback in the English language which adequately nullifies the retort:

'Don't show off, mate'

My current strategy is to wish them a good day. It totally wrong foots them.

Politeness is a good tactic and it's one I employ from time to time as it can disarm some peope and lead the way for a more reasoned roadside discussion, but others don't listen and just shout you down or repeat the same senseless comments - in these circumstances, I just ignore people.

"**** off, mate"?

Bruce - your post has wound me up. Therefore, I take it you'll now delete it? Because if someone is getting angry at you, you just do what they say even if you've done nothing wrong, right?

Would it help if I started shouting at you and hurling abuse?

A reflection of your intellect, and sparse grip on reality

"**** off, mate"?

Merely enhances my point.
