Undo couple of nuts and pull the wheel back hardly rocket science.
Maybe the chain has stretched and needs replacement?

Advise then to try a LBS if possible - problem is finding a good one
I pretty much trust the one I use - but he does sometimes replace bits that I am pretty sure didn;t need replacing just so he has something to charge me for - he doesn;t like charging just for time - in spite of me saying I think it is reasonable!

or get some tools and dive into youtube

Most people won't pay for what needs doing as it's expensive. Oh my bike cost this... but add on time and business overheads, labour isn't cheap.

The assessment will be a H&S thing too - bike goes in for new brake pads and maybe a chain. Assessment shows BB is shot, and cassette worn out. Time to do job is say an hour, bingo £200 please easily.

It's not greed. Said person sounds like they don't know one end of a bike from the other, so the will assess what needs doing, you can then chose what needs to be done. If you can't DIY, you are going to have to pay for it. Premises don't come cheap.

When fixing folks bikes I've done it at cost, but mentioned to a mate, even basic hydraulic brakes (his were shot) would cost him possibly £100 front and rear, he balked at the cost. Bike went back perfectly ride-able, except the brakes were shot. I spent a few hours sorting the bike out for him, cost to him was nothing, but if I think about my pay rate then £100 easily just in lost money to me. Had I had a shop/NI etc to pay, then you can double that.
