Depending what they suggest needs doing, it very well could cost £200. I do most of the maintenance on myself on my bikes (chains, cassettes, brakes, bar tape, replacing/servicing a bottom bracket/headset, hubs, tyres, tubes, etc), but every other year I will book them into a local shop for a complete strip and rebuild to the tune of about £140 because by then my cables need replacing and it's included in the cost. And they will give it a full service as well. Yes, I can (and do) all of the bits involved in a full service myself, but my bikes are all internally cabled and I can't be asked to do it myself. And if I'm dropping in the bike for the cables to be replaced, I might as well have them service it at the same time (plus give it a nice clean). If your friend hasn't done any basic maintenance on her bike at all, then £200 might not be unreasonable.
Oh no ! I always feel I should give the bike a good clean before it goes in so they can get on with the job I want them to do. Why have a talented person cleaning a bike when an cheap eejit like myself can do it well. ^_^

Goods and services have become more expensive. It has nothing to do with greed.

What's this got to do with Halfords?
Its got everything to do with greed many firms have lost a lot of work with me because of we will ring you back they all have the same patter we are very busy what a load of cobblers Halfords did surprise me but compared to some firms they are good.

I saw a Brompton for sale for £300 in the summer. The seller added a photo of the work a dealer said needed doing, total £550. I could have done it for about £40.

This happens to a mate of mine. The bikes come in a state and he's got to clean them first. I hope he charges extra.

They're always clean-ish- but in the strip and re-build, they always give it back sparkling.

Nothing in what you have said has any bearing on greed or otherwise.

Not ringing you back is certainly not down to greed. If they were being greedy, they would be after every last job they could get and would certainly ring you back, then if they were currently busy would do all they could to string you along until they could get to you.

Most of us prefer to have weekends for leisure time. It isn't greed to turn down jobs in favour of that. In fact it is the exact opposite of greed.

And if you think being able to spend the weekend watching TV means somebody is "lazy and overpaid", then might I suggest you try coming to the real world one day, and finding out just how things work. Your world views are naïve, to put it mildly.

It is clear from this thread you have absolutely NO idea what the word "greed" means, and you also seem to have no idea at all regarding work/lif balance.
