Unless I've misread, it can't be £225 for a chain unless she went next door to Rippoff and Leggitt LTD.
No, it was £225 for all he extra work they said "needs" doing.

Biker-man is somewhat mendaciously suggesting that was just for the chain - they can say no to everything apart from what they actually brought it in for, the rest is just recommendations from Halfords.

If you want a sensible reply, try using a font that people can read.
Edit to add - feck Halfords, I wouldn't use them if they were the last bike shop on earth.
A friend of mine is a manager at a Halfords. He used to think the derailleur was called a "deraleigh" ... He isn't the bike mechanic in store thankfully but you'd think their managers would know something about bikes...

Well what a surprise you are all happy to pay inflated prices well good luck to you all .

Nice assumption but I carry out my own work. Both on cars and bicycles.

Never once have i paid anyone to fix my bikes. But i don't knock anybody that does. I grew up in a mechanics shadow so it's all second nature and not mention the 50 odd years worth of tools and spanners i have, some collected by me and much donated by my old man. Some pay local bike shops as they appreciate the value of them, perhaps have that special tool and sometimes a good job is worth paying for. Not to mention the fact some don't have the skills and road bikes can reach speeds that can cause serious injury and even death to the rider so no surprise for paying for peace of mind.

In terms of your friend, she clearly wants help mechanically and my advice would be to simply shop around if possible and if hellfrauds is all she has access to, then she should insist on only quoting for the work she wants doing and nothing more. They're really a bad example of a bike shop in my opinion as they are a major national company farming every penny possible. A local bike shop has more interest in retaining a loyal customer base.

"Peace of mind" is exactly the reason (along with the financial incentive) why I do all my own bike maintenance, rather than let some spanner monkey at whatever bike shop loose on them. As you obviously know, they are not complicated machines. I would go so far as to ask if someone should be let loose riding a bike if they don't have even a basic knowledge of how they work and how to fix the easiest of problems. Same goes for motorbikes and cars - it's scary how many people are driving who don't know stuff like how to check oil level, put air in tyres, fill the screen wash etc..

Depending what they suggest needs doing, it very well could cost £200. I do most of the maintenance on myself on my bikes (chains, cassettes, brakes, bar tape, replacing/servicing a bottom bracket/headset, hubs, tyres, tubes, etc), but every other year I will book them into a local shop for a complete strip and rebuild to the tune of about £140 because by then my cables need replacing and it's included in the cost. And they will give it a full service as well. Yes, I can (and do) all of the bits involved in a full service myself, but my bikes are all internally cabled and I can't be asked to do it myself. And if I'm dropping in the bike for the cables to be replaced, I might as well have them service it at the same time (plus give it a nice clean). If your friend hasn't done any basic maintenance on her bike at all, then £200 might not be unreasonable.
