I make a point of not watching remakes of films I've loved - The Italian Job and Wickerman being just a couple this thread has brought to mind. I never, for that reason, saw the new Assault on Precinct 13 - the original was a lo-budget masterpiece; why remake it? Did anyone see it? Was it any good?

The greatest sacrilege of all!

This was a simple "Western" with a low budget cast and props, but stunningly effective and one of the greatest films of all time

John Carpenter's theme music was equally simple, but spellbinding and so atmospheric it made the film. As soon as he simple concussion started to bulid, then that fuzz guitar.............

It was a controversial film . The graphic shooting of the child at the start broke one of Hollywood's big taboos of the time, and CArpenter had to argue long and hard to get it past the censors

The "remake" simply wasn't any of this....., over complicated by effects, and plot lines that merely illustrated that they had either not seen, or had not understood the original

That theme tune still sends shivers down my spine by the way. It is truly splendid. Most of Carpenter's tunes are. Dude's a sadly underrated genius.

Saloms Lot. The original with David Soul and James Mason was and still is a classic. The remake was a disappointment and never captured the spooky tension of the first.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Another one with vincent price. Hill house I think it was? A sort of re make was done with liam Neeson. Those horror films can never be as good as the originals. They just don't have the atmosphere of the originals. Sorry, not very good remembering names of films.

House on Haunted Hill, maybe?

In the 1993 movie, Matinee, much of the action centers around John Goodman's character, a thinly veiled fictionalization of William Castle, who produced and often directed these films.

Reboot, re-imagine, reinterpret

All ways of saying that they have butchered the original by updating the plot to something unrecogniseable, and with no connection to the original

Another classic The Prisoner , no longer set in Wales, no longer has the Rover, no Cold War and none oft g e original atmosphere

Basically a modern script passed off under t h e title of the original

...

not always... but of course it's down to opinion. The Star Trek 'reboot' (sorry simon) is great. The Bond reboot is mostly good. The Battlestar Gallactica reboot was lots of fun. And the Prisoner Cell Block H reboot was brilliant.... all of which firmly connect to the original.
