i have a Specialized Tricross which I use for commuting. It came with BB5s which are really poor (less powerful than any Calipers brakes on my other bikes), so it's time to replace them.

I want to stick with existing road levers and cables. Any experiences with BB7s ? Or other cable calipers ?

Thanks !

BB7's are considered to be about as good as it gets with mechanical discs. I have them on my trike and they're fine. Before upgrading from 5 to 7 I would consider changing the disc pads. Some pads are designed to be very hard wearing (sintered for example) which often results in them being less powerful than a quicker wearing pad.

I had BB5s on my Kettwiesel and they were always needing adjustment, I upgraded to BB7s and they don't need constant adjustment. Go for your upgrade with confidence.

I have bb7 on my AWOL, and Im well impressed with them so far.

However, if I were to be doing a swap from BB5s I would go with the new TRP Spyre. With these, both the pads move towards the disc, and they are thinner, so adding a guard shoudnt require so much bending of the stays.

Looks good, I presume that they have the same bolt diameter/fittings, etc ?

The advantage of the BB7 is that both pads are adjustable

This makes the set up easier and quicker. As with the BB5, only one pad travels, pushing the disc against the other

Anyone have any experience to compare TRP Syre and Avid BB7s? On paper the Spyre should be better, but the bb7s are very popular.....

I have ordered the spyres as they are dual activation, so on paper should be better

My spyres arrived earlier today and i fitted them to the synapse and they make one hell of a difference compared to the promax rubbish that came on the bike. Very easy to set up and the dual activation is damn good for mechanicel discs
