I saw on the breakfast news that today is the first day of term.

That is strange, n'est pas?

When I was a kid, the Regimental Sergeant-Major (aka Mother) always dragged me out of bed and force-marched me to the first day of school on a Monday.

Why are they starting mid-week now?

Teachers need breaking in slowly, can't do a full week after five off

My son went back on Monday. His first day consisted of picking up his timetable and, erm, that's it. He's already had three lessons cancelled because of teacher absenteeism.

My boy starts school on Monday. A big day in our household. Mind you, for the first week he will come home before lunch and for the second week he will come home after lunch. He then goes full-time.

Oddly, I thought the roads today were still eerily quiet.

Yes my two are back from today. My wife has gone on a celebratory shopping spree (groan). Cars have gone from none to many overnight, even at 8.00 a.m.

You were unlucky. When I was a kid, we always went back on a Thursday.I always imagined it was a more humane return for both the teachers and the kids..kind of eases them in gently before hitting them with a full on proper week.

My wee one rode her new Islabike to school this morning for the first time and set an entirely new record for the 4 mile school run.
1 hour 15 minutes!;) Which is the slowest school run ever. (takes me 20 or 30 mins usually..) I think I've pushed my bike faster before.
But,it was lovely riding with her and she enjoyed pedalling herself, "like a proper cyclist." I'm sure she'll get more confident on the bike and (I really hope) faster in time.

I'm learning a much needed lesson in patience...

Ah! I see you didn't go to a succession of schools modelled on Colditz!

Our teachers made sure that we launched straight into a gruelling schedule of lessons and compulsory sports straight after assembly on that first Monday morning. If you were late in, you were given detention, even on the first day back after the summer holidays!

Ah! Those were the days, back when teachers were allowed to teach and the beatings were brutal ...

I remember our Latin teacher, his name was "Dr Death" (pronounced "Dee-ath"), he was about 6'2", he looked like Dracula (slender and menacing) and he always wore a white shirt, grey tie, charcoal suit and a full-length academic gown. He never smiled. Not once.
