The difference between The Netherlands and here is a stark contrast - 25% vs 2% of all journeys by cycle. The cycle infrastructure is quite simply astounding over there. Maybe one day we might have something close to it. But alas, I don't think it will be in my lifetime.

The problem is a) people wont push hard enough for it and b) they havent twigged how easy it is to research and promote it.

There might be a moment nationally speaking when riders get more proactive and have that epiphany moment. At the moment there is too much fear of being labled "arrogant" or "greedy".

When the oil has all gone and fracking has wrung every bubble of gas out of the ground the fatties will be queueing up to buy your bike, mark my words. All roads will be traffic free except for government vehicles running on recycled human blubber.

We saw the programme and were astonished at the attitudes of the inhabitants of one village - was it Addingham? - who were whining about the village being closed down for two entire days over the weekend. What they don't seem to have realised is that they are going to make an awful lot of money during those two days.

It helps also that the Netherlands is very flat and everyone can pootle around on steel bikes.

I'd like to see people trying to ride around Sheffield's hills, but most would give up and get back in the car within a week.

Of all the current UK mainstream TV exposure on cycling, that program had to be one of the most pro-cycling I have seen.

Bit by bit a beast is being woken, people are being openly shown what sh*t they put up with and how good the alternative (NL infrastructure) is like.

Yeah that was my thoughts too (NIMBY syndrome?). It is hardly a major inconvenience in that the roads will be closed for 8 hours a day for 2 days. I would expect that most people will have left for work, or will be returning from work either side of the forced road closure period. For those who do not work, it does not take much planning to get enough shopping in to last 2 days; we do this at least once per year over the festive period with little problem. I suppose those people who can't get to the shops in their cars could, dare I say, walk / cycle (might do them good). Take the IOM for an extreme example; The locals have to endure many weeks of road closures over the summer months to accommodate the TT races and the Manx GP (and other lesser events such as the Southern 100 and rallys). They seem to manage OK even though due to the lack of roads, some residents are effectively "land-locked" for the duration of the closures. Yes it must rag the locals, but they (I expect) tolerate it because of the history and the ammount of money in brings to the local economy. Personally, I would love to have the TdF come through my town. I would just take 2 days off work and enjoy the show.

Have you never heard of the Dutch hills, i.e the wind.

Good programme, comparing the Netherlands with the UK, now if it could be shown in all regions and national tv the average person who doesn't ride a bike because of safety concerns might add their voice to those that do.
The reporter must have felt like a scared beginner being the only person wearing a helmet, until the end when he was taking his bike on the ferry and it had mysteriously disappeared.

Ain't it a back to front Britain?

News media seem more interested in pollution in China than the fact that London has the 50 most Nitrogen Dioxide polluted areas of the country. And even when finally doing something they blame European laws.

London is quite weird, it should be cyclist or electric vehicles only anyway. Its not as anyone can go anywhere fast as it is.

But helmets improve safety don't they?

Absolutely.
