Like playing indoor and outdoor football. Different sports with the same instrument.
Not exactly, as indoor football generally has 5 a side whilst outdoor generally has 11 a side.

Indoors on a trainer has you Cycling a bike, whilst outdoors has you Cycling a bike. Only difference being that the wheels are not in contact with the ground.

Cycling is cycling

Training on a turbo trainer is training

Playing Zwift is playing Zwift

Pretty simple imo

I can't imagine why anyone would even care how many "miles" someone else has supposedly ridden, how much power they develop, or how much their average speed is. Walking/running/cycling is only real when the ground is moving underneath you.

Is cycling on the road cycling?

Is cycling on a cycle track cycling?

Is cycling off road cycling?

Is cycling around a muddy course against others cycling?

Is cycling a sportive cycling?

Is cycling indoors around an oval track cycling?

Is cycling on Zwift on a Turbo cycling?

I rest my case.

For me, yes to all apart from the last option as you don't actually move and go somewhere unlike all the others ;) is using an exercise bike cycling? If you think yes, then for you turning the pedals on a turbo trainer could also be called 'cycling'

Not sure what an oval reach is though?

Clearly a typo. Duly corrected, thank you.

Just for clarity then, indoor cycling around an indoor track where you can’t see the outside world and you are never more than a couple of hundred metres from where you started...is real cycling...but using a Turbo never is.

Interesting how the passage of time, and the accepted norm, changes opinions.

I have to admit that I love outdoor road cycling, and only use Zwift as a means to an end. I don’t rate off road cycling at all, but I don’t think it’s not “real” cycling, just because it doesn’t fit in with my idea of enjoyment.

I just think that ANY kind of cycling is better than no cycling, when circumstances don’t allow the ideal type of cycling that anyone enjoys.

Calling it Training doesn’t really cut it tbh. You can train on the road, off the road, on an indoor track or on a Turbo.

I don’t have mudguards on either of my “bikes”, so they’re clearly flim flam. They’re not steel, so they’re not real.

You never said track cycling was 'real' cycling...just cycling. Yes, you move when the pedals turn...I'd say that is cycling, albeit track cycling. A turbo isn't cycling for me, it's indoor exercising like going to a gym  mileage doesn't apply for the same reason

I never said road cycling was “real” cycling in that post either, but I think we all know where I was going with it.

I respect other people having their own opinion on this and would never rubbish anyone else’s opinion.

Imagine turning to Geraint Thomas and congratulating him on winning Paris-Nice, The Tour of the Alps and then wearing the Maillot Jaune, and saying “well done, those 2 Olympic Gold’s weren’t real cycling”?

I don't know what you mean? Did he get his gold medals on Zwift?

I never said your view was wrong. I asked you your opinion of using an exercise bike as for me, that's no different to a turbo, ditto a spin bike, a watt bike or any other static bike like machinery

I've done my real cycling earlier today, now I'm going to exercise on my turbo in front of the football

What case? I don’t know why you like to over complicate things, it’s very simple:

Cycling is cycling

Training on a turbo trainer is training

Playing Zwift is playing Zwift

Training on the road is also training.

Playing Zwift? It’s hardly PlayStation!
