Recent events having encouraged a segue away from steak and sausages towards veges and pulses, I was rootling through the cupboard and came up with three cans of chick peas.

After consulting St Delia, I soon had a pan simmering away with onions, peppers, garlic, ginger and chilli, then opened the first can, upended it to drain, and spotted the sell-by date on the base. Jul 2001. I checked the others. Jul 2001.

Well, they looked ok, they smelt ok, and I wasn't about to throw away all that veg, so I finished my spicey chick pea rissoles, and very tasty they were too.

11 years, three months. Beat that if you can.

I ate some tinned peaches that were around 25 years old from my grandads house. They were really nice too

I thought that a can of beer would stay drinkable indefinitely, so drunkenly left one outside out of reach in 2007, its still there but has gone rusty looking despite being aluminium. I don't think itll be safe to drink!

The protective coating on the inside of the can should still be intact.

My mum has been holding on to a massive tin of black treacle which she uses about once every 10 years - the date on it is 1952. Still tastes good though!

There's a 'convenience'/alcohol(even though our religion forbids us to sell it - but we'll sell it anyway) shop near me.
Some of the obscure tinned goods at the back are many years past their best before date.
Next to the tinned goods are hair brushes - that come with free hair!
And what's in the fresh veg stand has fossilised or turned in to compost.

I have some Elderberry wine that I made in 1984. It tastes better with age.
Home brew made around the same time. Highly unstable & unsafe to move. It "eats" a rubber bung in about a year 18 months, so theres a few of those added to it over time. What they've done to/for its taste or flavour I don't know.

Threw away a box of teabags with a use by date of October 93 yesterday. Bought at the back end of last week!

Many years ago my dad went to his dad's on a hot summer afternoon. Grandad offered dad a can of beer; dad didn't remember grandad ever drinking beer in the daytime let alone being so recklessly generous with it so quickly accepted.

"Is, errr, that beer, errr, nice then?"
"Yes thanks dad, it's lovely"
"Really?"
"Yes, it's great, thanks very much"
"Oh, in that case I might have the other one with my tea"

That was the point that dad enquired about the provenance of the beer; it had been left in the kitchen cupboard by the house's previous owner and was, then, at least 10 years old!

Mother-in-law found a tin of Ovaltine in her cupboard with 3/6 on the price label so it's at least February 1971!
Popped the foil seal and it looked fine.... :stop:

... that's only 17.5p.
