H-bombs are seriously bad news. They are also exceptionally difficult to make, and use, unless the ready made, and proven tech, is supplied, by a 'backer'. I find it hard to believe that the tin pot North Koreans have the resources, or the wherewithal to do it alone. But if they have a delivery system, as well as the device, they need to be stamped on, and hard, and soon.

" North Korean state media said the country "deserved to hold nuclear weapons... to counter nuclear threats by the US"."

Surely they have a point.
It seems a very naïve to think that we and our allies can hold all sorts nuclear weapons while others who feel threatened or are at the receiving end of aggression from us or our allies somehow must not.

If we continue to hold nukes then we can only expect over time that every group we oppose will get nukes simply as they feel threatened by us or our allies.

If you were Kim Jong-un and you saw the possibility that Donald Trump would be in charge of the big red button in the oval office then you would be doing as he is doing and getting a couple of aces up his sleeve.

Last time I looked North Korea did not have 28,000 troops stationed on the US border or have warships full of missiles sailing up and down the US coast.

More worrying than simply possessing a thermonuclear weapon they're claiming it's a compact device rather than a huge bulky thing like the first attempts from the US and USSR. Compact devices can be fitted on missiles, dropped from aircraft, concealed in vans...

Bad ju-ju indeed.

On the plus side, they just detonated what's probably their only device so if anyone is thinking about turning North Korea into a car park they've still got time to do so.

Fills me with dread and trepidation. I am really worried for my children most of all. Perhaps we could re-instate the Nuclear base at Greenham Common (as recently seen in the latest Star Wars movie!)

good point well put. I find it arrogant the some nuclear armed nations have imposed themselves as the world police just because they have all the really big guns. but that's just the way it is. Even today most people see the USSR as the aggressor that almost caused a nuclear war during the Cuban Missile crisis, when all they wanted to do was to marginally redress the balance of all those nukes the US had pointing at Russia. I also find it arrogant that any nation that turns around and says "f*ck you USA... you're not our masters!" is automatically part of the Axis of Evil. We live in a very silly world.
